Drum vs. Disc: drag racing application.

i've been thinkin lately of swapping my current rear for a disk brake rear, mainly for ease of maintance.

i currently have a 7.5" rear fitted with a set of richmond 4.10 gears and an eaton posi unit w/ 28spline axles. i upgraded to aluminum drums to reduce rotating mass.

what would be the pros/cons of running a disc brake rear over this current setup? if i did go to a disc rear, i would probably look into getting a fourth gen rear, to upgrade to the nicer pbr calipers, and to open up my options for wheel upgrades down the road.

Remember with disc brakes, there is aways some drag on the rotor. With drums, you can turn the shoe adjuster so there is no drag on the drum.

However in the event of a c-clip failing, the cailper will hold the rotor in place so the whole axle wont come out like on a drum rear.

hmm...yeah, been there before...

that was my dad's car...

anyway, wouldn't the clamping power on the discs be better for launching though? so i can hit the converter harder? i guess a linelock could be used to over come the problem with too much clamping forces during burnouts...

i believe a drum rear actually clamps harder for a better launch, but you're not using a huge stall where i think it will matter at all. Also a disc rear is super important on a 10 bolt for that type of failure alone, remember swapping to a 9 bolt or 9" would allow bolt in axles instead so then it really wouldn't matter. Since you're set on keeping the 10 bolt I'm assuming, definately the disc "axle retaining" ability is worth it alone from a safety standpoint. Oh yea, nice hat.....i got one just like it. we're such pimps
