Alternative to factory e-brake

since i'm working on the brakes this week, i figure i should tackle my lack of an e-brake.. the PO had cut the line where it comes down out of the vehicle because he told me they never worked right.. (whatever that is supposed to mean).. now i was thinking, if i go and buy new cables and try to hook everything back up somehow and they don't work right i'm gonna be pissed.. SO

what are some alternatives to the factory e-brake? i know some poeple just don't run one.. but seeing how i have a stick, i want one. my first though was a line lock.. but i think i read somewhere that they can't or shouldn't be used as an alternative to the ebrake for some reason.

Cliffs
1. Have stick, PO cut ebrake cables cause they never worked right
2. want to find alternative to factory e-brake
3. is a line lock ok?
4. anything else?

Disk or drum?

If disk, upgrade to 89+ rear disks. In my experience the pre-89 rear disks never work right. The parking brake mechanism is the root of the problems.

The early rear disks have a poorly designed adjustment mechanism, operated by the e-brake, which is notorious for failing. That means that the rear disks can not account for pad wear and will quit working at all, after a while.

Fo a search and you will find all the answers you need.
