brake drum problems

I came home from school today and my dad was replacing my brakes with ceramic brake pads. The night before, he told me the whole drum and springs were all rusted. This was the first time we got the wheels off because we purchased the car with custom rims on it and they no longer make the wrench to take the lug nuts off. So, we had to get them cut off. Well, my dad said it was all rusted and he had to beat the drum off. It took him 2 and a half hours for one brake. So, today i came bak and he said there's something wrong with the drum because it won't come off. He took the car for a ride and he said it was like he was driving with the brakes held down. When he came bak he tried to take the drum off but it was really hot (from friction and grinding) he doesn't know what's wrong i told him we could jus order new drums but he said that he is getting the old ones trimmed down and we would have to trim new ones down too. Don't really know what hes talking about, but any1 know whats going on?

Sounds like the reason the drums would not come off is the shoes were adjusted too tight against the drum. There's a slot on the backing plate where you can stick a screw driver in to push the actuator lever off of the adjusting screw (starwheel) to release the pre load on the shoes.

He doesn't either, best keep him away from the brakes! I'm sure he was well intentioned but novice brake work has totalled far to many classics, get it fixed by a pro.
