weird???

well i was driving the otherday and my passenger side rear drum was making a strange noise so i parked it at home, then i took it back out and as i was pulling out the driveway the rear tire locked up for a second or two when i applied the brakes. so i got out and noticed i was missing a lugnut, then i pulled the wheel off and the drum and seen that a rear pad was explodied and these pads are new with only 3000 miles at the most. what will cause a pad to explode, can it be the missing of a lugnut?? also just one is exploded the other is fine??

maybe it just got hot, maybe they werent' adjusted right. Check to see that the drum is OK, replace the shoe, and get motoring.

Were they bonded type pads with no rivets to hold them to the shoe ? If so you could have gotten a bad one and it let loose and kinda got ground up in there.
