Brake terminology?

I ws looking into doing the pbr rear disc upgrade on the 84 rear axle i recently got. I was wondering if someone could clarify what the carrier and backing plate are? I was thinking that the backing plate was the braket that bolts to the axle flange, and that the carrier was the caliper assembly. But i'm not to sure and didn't want to go to a parts store and look like an idiot.

The backing plate is the stamped metal plate that bolts to the axle flange. The carrier is the cast piece that bolts to the backing plate that the caliper is mounted to.

Thanx abunch i've read alittle of u're thread previously, it's what made me want to do the upgrade in the first place. I just never rear the whole thing yet as i hadn't checked to see if i had a 9 bolt or 10 bolt rear.

The only difference in the 9- or 10-bolt swap is the backing plates.

I know + i've read that the 9 bolt doesn't need spacers. But if it is a 9-bolt i might try and find a 10-bolt for it, cause when i start on the suspension and that thing gets traction, that poor 9-bolt wont stand a chance.

FYI, the 9- is stronger than the 10-bolt.
