Ok, before you u post the smiley i did and really didnt find what i was looking for.


Ok i have a 89 trans am with rear drum. I got an offer for a 10 bolt posi unit with disk brakes for 150$. All i need to know is if i can just bolt it in, connect the lines and go. if not what do i need and where can i get it?

You're supposed to change the proportioning valve along with it. The drum cars have a hold-off valve in there that keeps the front brakes from applying before the fluid pressure gets high enough to move the rear shoes against the return springs. I know people who never changed it and said it was fine, but the same people are usually the ones who crimp off the rear brake lines with vise grips and cruise around town.
I would remove the plug on the end of the proportioning valve, take the hold-off valve out, and put a pipe plug in the end of the prop. valve. But that's just my two cents...

 

10 bolt out of what? 82-92 .. guessing it's a complete 10 bolt rear end with calipers and e-brake cables? Did you get the proportioning valve for proper brake bias?

 

just bought it like an hour ago, he didnt know too much about it, its an 86 rear he thinks, posi, 3.23s, setup for disk but no rotors or calipers everything esle is there.

looks like it has new brake lines, thats about it.

can i use my cables from my drum brakes?

 

brake lines are different, you will need flex lines to go to the calipers, the hard lines can be made to work, i believe the e-brake is differnet too, but get the right ones and they will swap out with no troubles.

 

e-brake cables are definitely different. Had that problem with my 87 Z28, drum cables were different and I had no e-brake. Not a problem if you have an auto. I myself hate leaving a manual car in gear.

cables will swap. Find a set at a junkyard or ebay or the classified section and you're good to go.

 

You can get e-brake cables form Advance Auto. That's where I got mine from. I'm still using my disk/drum prop valve and they work but I still need to swap it out.

Uncle Skeletor: where do I get the pipe plug you're talking about? I'm going to make the rash assumption that all the brake fluid in the resevor will leak out when I take that plug out?
