Rear Swap Disk to Disk Brake Question

Next weekend ill be swapping my rear in place of another 10 bolt from an 87 Iroc. Now it has the steel calipers that are similar to the front disk calipers. My current rear has PBRs. I want to keep the PBRs that are on my car now. Is it just a simple swap over the backing plates and all? Anything i need to know? I mean i guess all the 10 bolts are the same so everything should just swap over right?

Thanks
-Steve

Re: Rear Swap Disk to Disk Brake Question

You will however run into an issue with the ebrake lines that run under the car. The earlier rears (88 and earlier) had an adjustable cable setup as where the later style (89-92) were fixed. You'll have to pull this setup off an earlier car for everything to work. This is what I've been told, I haven't seen the parts in person to know the exact details.

Ya going from the 92 rear to the 87 rear so everything is swaping over. PBR with e-brake setup.

Arg looks like i will have to remove the axle shafts to slide the backing plate off...

Can i just cut a 1-2" slot in the backing plate to slide it off instead? Is there any harm in that?

Just go ahead and slide the axles out. Do it right the first time.

Done, the PBRs bolted directly up to the axle, only had to drill 1 hole for the left side caliper hose bracket.

Re: Rear Swap Disk to Disk Brake Question

so what was the purpose of this swap, different gearing? wouldn't it have been easier (and probably cheaper) to just swap out the ring and pinion?

Re: Rear Swap Disk to Disk Brake Question

Mainly just to swap gears and it was cheaper to swap an entire rear over. Good set of gears $150, $100 install kit, + who knows $ for a labor charge. I got this whole rear for $300.

On top of this, my gf has a 2.73 open / drum rear and i plan on putting my old 3.23 posi / disk rear in her car. So it worked out well for both of us.

Re: Rear Swap Disk to Disk Brake Question

If you put your "old" rear under your GF's car...which brakes will you use?

Having used both the old style iron rear disks, and rear drums...I would rather have the drums, at least they work.

The old style Delco-Moraine calipers are much maligned, but the truth is that if the "fix-it" kit is employed and you used the e-brake regularly, the brakes are fine--or at least they were on my car. I've since swapped in PBR's to match the front 1LE's and have no complaints with this braking system either.

I used the "fix-it" kit, several of them actually and I ALWAYS used my parking brake...even though it would only work for a few days if I didn't go adjust the calipers manually.

I have had 2 different rear ends with the old style disks and neither one EVER worked right, until I swapped in the PBR's.

I would happy swap the Delco-Moraine disks for DRUMS is that was my only alternative. I would NEVER swap them INTO anything
