GTA brakes conversion
I need some advice, I'm lost...
I own a stock 1983 T/A with standard turbine wheels, not Turbo-cast.
I've been offered a "complete" GTA brake set to upgrade my car. That includes rotors, calipers, brake lines, hubs and mastervac. No spindles needed said the owner
I thought GTAs were equipped with the 1LE brake package that 15" wheels don't fit. What was really set on GTAs ? This one is a late 87, early-production car that has only 9000 miles so the brakes are new...
Do these brakes are really better than mines ? Will they fit the 15x7 Turbo-cast wheels I plan to buy ?
The man wants $ 630 for the parts (450 euros actually, I leave in Europe). I planned to buy the SSBC 2-piston caliper kit, SSBC upgraded rotors, Classic tube brake lines and a new Delco mastervac for a total of $ 1030 plus shipping. Twice the price with shipping.
What do you think is the best choice ? I can't find advices here in France and don't wanna be robbed...
Thanks a lot !

Re: GTA brakes conversion
with the possible exception of metric fitings the fronts are exactly the same.
the rear discs are a little better then your rear drums. if you allready have rear discs these 87 ones will be an aluminum version of the same iron calipers you already have. i would not pay too much for them. those older rear discs are nothing special. a set of 88+ "1LE" rears will be a nice upgrade, but upgrading from drums to 82-87 discs is not worth the effort IMO.
the "1LE" brakes did not start until 1989.

Re: GTA brakes conversion
Thank you so much for the advice !!!
Well, since my car already has 4 discs, all I have to do is to stick to the aftermarket kits...
You made me avoid spending 600 bucks for just new rotors
I'll order my parts later this month !!!
Thanks again

600$. no offense man, but you were about too spend a bit too much. you could do an LS1 swap with new pads and and rotors for that much. (well, at least new pads).
i have almost all the parts i need for my front LS1 swap and i think i am only in about 165$. but i have yet to get rotors or pads, that is the big$ there. the Calipers i got in trade for some work i did for a friend. i also got the rest of the swap parts (caliper cariers, relocation brackets, hubs, lines, bleeders, banjo bolts) for a little cheap because i traded Ebmiller some other parts as well as cash.
you could PM him, but it seems to me you can get a front LS1 kitt (as in hubs, brackets, rotors, calipers, pads, all hardware) for around 600. that might even include modified spindles too. i am going to have to modify my own spindles and it is the part i am worried about.

Re: GTA brakes conversion
Well, I'd love to swap LS1 brakes, but I'm pretty sure they won't fit my 15" Knight rider wheels...
So, I'll keeps with the SSBC kit anyway. Unless you have another great idea : )
