86 9 bolt 'Aussie' rear backing plate question

I bought a 9 bolt rear out of an 86 Camaro from a salvage yard and it turns out to be the rear built in Australia. Will be using it in a street rod. I disassembled the rear, cleaned, sandblasted, removed all the brackets, painted and reassembled with new axle bearigs and seals. When I got to installing the axles with the backing plate / caliper mount it seems as though both the mounting plates are identical, and when I mount them, the only way they seem to mount is with one caliper facing rearward and one caliper facing to the front. This is driving me crazy! Am I nuts or is this the way they were? Sorry I didn't pay more attention when I took them apart!!

Please help!!

That's correct for an '86, one leading caliper, one trailing. GM saved some cash by using the same caliper and plate on both sides.

Thanks for the info Ed. Do you happen to know which side forward and which side rear or doesn't it matter...maybe for an e-brake set up??

This is how the calipers were installed on my 1988 so yours should be the same, driver's side trailing, passenger side leading:

It's not hard to figure out; just remember, the bleeder screws go at the top of the caliper. Once you establish that, there's only one way for them to go.
