Going to junkyard tomorrow

Im going to a local salvage yard tomorrow and im considering a disk brake conversion on my 92 rs. Ive read the articles on it and just wanted to make sure i get the list right. I need the calipers and the brackets of an ls1 camaro? I plan on buying new rotors and pads.

You should buy new calipers too.
I am not sure of everything you will need, but if you have drum brakes you will need a rubber line off the end of the metal line on your car to each caliper so it can move.

Re: Going to junkyard tomorrow

Yes be very sure to get the parking brake cables, backing plates (has caliper mount on it) , rotors, the e-brake/brake line bracket off the lower control arm, and I'd grab the metal brake lines also. They can easily be modified to work with your stock drum brake line that connects the rear to the chassis.

I'm working on this swap right now and the problems I'm having are getting a set of brake cables (the guy that I bought the entire rear with brakes from torched the axle out, and cut the cables with the damn torch. I've tried a couple of local places for the cables, and I just ordered a set from Napa online. If they can't get them I'll go with GMpartsdirect.

I've worked out a way to use the LS1 rear cables with my stock front brake cable. When (and if) I get my new rear cables I'll make a post about how I worked this out. I've also worked out a set of braided brake lines for the calipers. I already have a braided line from the chassis to the rear axle on my drum brake rear, so I just needed lines for the calipers. The stock LS1 lines don't look like they will work. The 4th gen rear is 2" wider per side and the way the brake lines are I think bending them with a narrower axle will probably break them. Again when I get everything (cable and brake lines) I'll make up a post with pics of everything.

For now here are a few pics of how I modded the metal brake lines to work with my stock drum brake hose. The right side was easy, just a little reforming of the brake line and it has the correct fitting for the hose block. The left side required cutting and re-flaring a new bubble flare with an extra fitting I had that matched my the right one. Took about 20 minutes and looks factory. I rented the flaring tool from a local CSK store.

Re: Going to junkyard tomorrow

I bought an entire 01 camaro LS1 rear for $275 off of craig's list. Has 3.23 gears and a zexel posi. I'm hoping after I pull the brakes I can get at least $100 out of what's left, maybe more. So if I do get some $$$ out of it I should be in the entire conversion with new brake cables and new braided brake lines for under $300. A used zexel posi alone just went for $270 on Ebay, so $100 shouldn't be too hard to get out of what's left.

Give craig's list a try. Never know what you will find there.

Re: Going to junkyard tomorrow

Here's what I worked out for braided lines for my rear LS1 brake swap. Haven't got my new cables in yet, when I do I'll try and get some pics if it works out like I hope it will.
