parking brake "coupler"

i was recently given a 92 firebird and am slowly trying to get it on the road. I took it today for state inspection and the mechanic failed the parking brake coupler. I got under the car today and traced the lines from the rear brakes up to the bracket that joins them to the cable that runs up to the front of the car. the edge of the bracket is bent. I don't know why this constitutes a failure, because my parking brake works fine, but i need to find a new one of these couplers from somewhere. I'm also not quite sure how to remove it either. any thoughts? thanks...

Re: parking brake "coupler"

there are cables going in from three directions. If you follow the brake cables from each rear brake, they reach a point where they are joined to a single cable that travels to the front of the car by a metal bracket. This bracket is what's damaged. If I remember correctly they come together just in front of the rear axle. When I looked under there to try and find it, there was something blocking my view, which I think was the exhaust, but now I can't remember. (It was late last night... sorry). Once I get back over to the shop, I'll jack it up and get pictures if I can.

Doesnt it kindof have a plastic roller and if thats broken you are in danger of rubbing the cable till its broken that may be why it failed
