big brake upgrade
Hey guys, my names Tyler im new here and i was hoping you might be able to help me out with some questions i have about brakes. i have a 92 camaro rs and i just found a posi rear at a swap meet a few weeks ago. i am making the switch from rear drum brakes to disk but ive been told that the stock disks are not very good. so i was looking at this website:
http://www.bigbrakeupgrade.com/index.htm
and i thought wow this is perfect, good brakes at a good price. but im am unsure if its the whole set or just the front brakes and if it is only front brakes then i dont know what to put on the rear. i have 18inch american racing torq thrust rims so spacing for the LS1s shouldnt be a problem right? if any one can clarify what comes in the kit that would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

A few questions. The "rear" you got was from a 3rd gen F body right? You can tell because it'll have just the lower control are brackets/shock brackets and the housing will be cast with the torque arm mount in the center.
What type of brakes did it come with? Early cars came with tiny 10.5" rotors and iron calipers. These are considered the "bad" rear discs.
The other set available on the 3rd gen had larger rotors with finned cast alluminum calipers.
These are really good brakes and if you got them inexpensive they will be just fine.
The 4th gen cars came with 2 different rear disc setups. The 93-97 discs are about the same as ours. They can be made to fit but are not any better than the late 3rd gen discs.
The 98+ 4th gen rears are larger than ours and use a completely different combination of parts.
I believe you need a custom set of brackets to make them fit also.
They use a drum parking brake as well. They are definitely an upgrade compared to what we got but I wouldnt even think about that until your fronts were updated.
Those are what really show tha cars age, Look up the various front brake upgrades and chose whatever one you think will work best for you then look into stepping up the rear brakes.
The link you posted is a good example of what's available for a front end upgrade.

Re: big brake upgrade
the rear is out of a 3rd gen.the brakes on the rear are not aluminum. im am looking to upgrade both front and rear brakes at the same time( plus it will be easier to work on the rear when its not on the car). i was hoping to find a kit that included front as well as rear brakes.
also is it normal for a limited slip rear with 3.73s from a 83-86 camaro to have an emergency brake setup on one side only?

Re: big brake upgrade
Yes, all of them except for the 98 and later version as mentioned.
To the OP, when you say the E brake is missing I assume the rest of tha caliper is there?
If so it looks like you're missing the leaver/spring assembly that (I believe) bolts to the caliper.
Thats how my Mazda is and I believe that's how my 3rd gen is but I havent worked with the old iron rear discs before.
One thing I'm thinking about though is I dont think the old iron caliper equipped rears can be swapped to the larger discs like the drum rear can.
I'd get anything worth your money out of the housing and sell it for a couple bucks, then you can either pick up a later disc rear or modify your stock drum rear to accept the later discs using the kits available.

You can. Check the following link:

BTW, above by OE, I meant thirdgen (though the 93-97 version is nearly identical to the 89-92 PBR set-up).
Check the following FAQ for more info concerning brakes, e-brakes, upgrades, etc.:
