Can i drive this?

I just bought a 92 firebird. I need to drive it home from where i bought it about 40 miles. I noticed that the car is leaking brake fluid from the line near the rear brakes from a rusty line. It literally shoots out when you press on the brake. The car was sitting about a year. My question is, will i be able to drive this home so i can repair it at home or will i lose all brakes? I seem to think that there is 2 different lines so that if you lose one the car will still stop, can anyone verify?

there is only 1 line going to the rear, it splits on the axle into 2 lines.

Not a good idea to drive it any distance, if you run out of fluid you will loose all brakes and cause an accident.

Re: Can i drive this?

If you can cut a hose and put the hose around it and a clamp or two on it, you can at least drive it a little way with no fluid loss. Thats the main issue, losing fluid. If its not losing much (and if its a pinhole it might just be insignificant) things should be fine. I had the same thing happen on a car of mine, only reason I put a hose and clamp on it was because it was under the hood squirting at the engine. If the line is rusted out really bad you may want to forget all that and do the safe thing and tow it.

In any case, make sure the e-brake works if you do plan to drive it and leave lots of safe stop space.

Re: Can i drive this?

I was thinking about the rubber line, it is squirting out pretty quickly, all the lines in the back are pretty rusty, i was planning on putting all new in once i get it home. I am surprised you would lose all your brakes, i thought it would have a backup

i would either crimp the line going to the back or you can simply but caps on the master cylinder. I did this on my pickup because i had a line that rusted through in the back so i just dont have rear brakes at the moment. but definitly replace the brake lines once you get home
