1989 with 4 wheel disc brakes???
Were any 89 Camaros made with 4 wheel disc brakes, besides the 1LE??? I put a 1986 Z-28 rear in my 89 RS, and am having trouble getting the Stainless Brake lines for it...Will the ones for the 86 work, and also, what is the difference between the master cylinder for the 4 wheel disc versus front disc, rear drum?? Thanks for any help on this.......

there are a lot of differences between the master cylinder and the - darn cant remember the name of it now - but the block that distributes the pressure of the master cylinder.
and its not hard to find the brake lines - you can buy braded ones or use standard steel. this board has a break section. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...sk-brakes.html is one of them and you should be able to follow the yellow brick road and find the emerald city pretty easy.
you will find step by step on just about everything.
good luck

Thanks, I changed the proportioning valve when I did the rear end swap..BUT as I had just bought the master cylinder, I did not change it..I am replacing most of the brake system now, and want it all to be right...I talked to the summit people, and ordered the Braided lines for a 1986 four wheel disc brake setup....sure hope it will fit the car.......The brakes have never worked like I thought they should, and that could be because of the master cylinder......Any suggestions????????? Thanks again, Tom

Re: 1989 with 4 wheel disc brakes???
i can help you find a link but there are a lot better people than me for that one. go onto the break board and see who keeps popping up with information then pm them. that is what i do. plus i like to come on and read the new posts and see what is happening so that if i run into the same problem i might remember what i read, or at least remember that someone discussed it.
i like the idea of rear disk breaks but i cant put them on my car until i get 16 or 17 inch rims. but right now im on the engine after i did the interior.
good luck

Re: 1989 with 4 wheel disc brakes???
86 will be the iron Delco calipers....89 will be the PBR calipers.
I dunno if they share the same threads on the fittings, but I'd suspect they do. Hope so, for you, since you already ordered them.

If the rear brakes are from an 86, the calipers might not be much good. Check if you can keep the car from moving in gear with the parking brake on.
There are only 2 rubber lines in the back on the 86 setup. One from the body to the axle (that is probably identical to any other thirdgen), and one from one of the calipers to the axle, I think its the driver side. The other is connected by hard line only.

The rear parking brakes worked pretty good, untill I drove one night with them on...LOL.......Thanks for the info guys.Maybe, I will get lucky, and this will work out....I forgot to order some new pads while I was at it, now will have to pay shipping twice...I keeep hearing good things about the Hawk pads, perhaps I will look into them.....I don't really give my brakes a workout, but the other day after changing struts, I was tryinmg to "set" the front end down, and I realixed the brakes are terrible..I figure new pads, the right master cylinder, new stainless brake lines, and possibly new rear calipers should help out some.........Once again, thanks to all.......Tom

Re: 1989 with 4 wheel disc brakes???
Everyone complains about the iron calipers being useless....
My e-brake can keep my car from moving easily. And I locked up all 4 tires from 70mph, trying to avoid a deer (i didn't succeed
). I think that means my rears are working , huh?

BTW, all 89-92 non-1LE four-wheel disc cars were equipped with front 10.5" rotors and iron Delco-Moraine calipers; the rear had 11.7" rotors and alum PBR calipers. The swap to PBR's is straightforward, should you ever be interested:

Re: 1989 with 4 wheel disc brakes???
As JamesC said, there is absolutely no need at all to change the master. I used my disk/drum stoock master for awhile when I put the LS1 rear brakes on to complement the 13" Wilwood setup I designed for the front. Then swapped to a 4th gen disk/drum master to update the car a little. Both worked perfectly with the disk/disk prop valve I installed.

Re: 1989 with 4 wheel disc brakes???
Can anyone explain in more detail the reference to the parking brake working in this tread? My 88's parking brake dosen't work at all and my mechanic said the rear calipers are the problem. Apparently there is some type of screw mechanism in the brake that operates when you pull the parking brake. Can anyone shine more light on this operation?

Thanks everybody...The braided lines seemed to have helped a little, and I ordered the green stuff pads, just have not got them on yet.....

That really p'd me off dealing with that one stupid rear caliper with the hard line. Wtf were they thinking when they designed that?
