Brakes Disappeared
Brakes Disappeared
I've got a 86 Z28 with drum rears and my brakes always seemed a little spongy and under idle I would have to hold them almost to the floor to hold back the car but tonight I came back in from a quick trip to walmart and my brakes just died when I pulled into my driveway so I flicked it into neutral and then into park when I rolled to a stop. Now I need help finding my problem, any detailed suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also another note: my ebrake has never worked but I haven't had a chance to look at it, I just got out of college for break so now I have time to work on her.

Re: Brakes Disappeared
Brake fluid level low or leaking?Could be break booster or leaky break cylinder on rear.Do they work better if pumped up
Re: Brakes Disappeared
Well I haven't checked the fluid level since it was dark when this happened so I'll have to take a look in the morning but they worked somewhat better pumped up but it felt like there was a small leak in the system because everytime I would pump the brakes, the pedal wouldn't really hold firm it would slowly soften up like it was losing pressure.

Ok Update:
I went out this morning and without the engine running the brakes pump up really strong but once its on then they go soft when you pump them up. I had to mash it to the floor to get my car to stop from maybe 1 or 2 miles an hour in my driveway.

You've got a leak, or a bad brake hose. 1st check the fluid level - if it's too low then you'll have to remove the master cylinder and bench bleed it. If you can't find a leak at any of the wheels, I'd replace the brake hoses on each corner, bleed the system, and see what happens then.
