Darn kids and brakes

Hey all... well I've been working on the vert for a couple of months now. I won't bore you with all the work I've done but I will say that I put on now rear drums and shoes and spring kit. It was working beautifully until my kid decided to drive it with the e-barke on... for a couple of miles. Now the rear drum on the drivers side gets extremely hot and the shoes are smelling lovely. I already tore it apart once and had a heck of time getting the drum off. I adjusted the shoes way back and put back on the drum. Seemed like problem was solved but it's back. I'm going to take the drum back off but wanted to get some ideas of what to look for. Seems like the e-brake won't release after it's been engaged. Any ideas on the problem or what to look for???? Thanks all!

Re: Darn kids and brakes

sounds like you answered your question, the e brake wont release. prolly gonna have to cut the e brake and replace it if you still want it that bad.

Thanks... when you say cut the e-brake.. which part? I'm assuming you mean the cable. Then from what point does the cable get replaced... the whole way to the lever? It seems the problem should only be at the drum not the cable. I can't remember how the e-brake mechanism in the drum actuates the shoes to apply when the e-brake is set. Is that spring loaded or just a lever?

Re: Darn kids and brakes

Check the spring tension of the springs that retract the shoes. It is possible that the heat ruined the springs so that they no longer pull the shoes back.

Thanks RBob. I'll check the tension. It seems a little odd that the brakes work properly under normal breaking. They seem to hang after use of the e-brake. Nothing to do with the brakes but could this overheating have affected the wheel bearings? Don't seem to have a problem that I can tell... just curious.

Well, as much as I love to blame my kid for doing dumb stuff.. I can't blame him for this one... PROBLEM SOLVED. As it turned out it had nothing to do with the parking brake being left on; although that did multiply the hot condition of the drum. I was the dumba$$ who attached the parking brake lever on the wrong side of the shoe. It was hanging and wouldn't retract. Swapped it around and it works great now. Lesson learned.
