Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
The spring install takes less than 5 minutes and really makes a big differance in rear braking effectiveness. I just changed out the spring yesterday when i completed my drum to disc swap and the improvement is outstanding. I don't think my rear drums were doing anything to stop the car. Now it stops on a dime.

I ordered both spring rates and I am going to do some testing with them. I will post my experiences here after I am done. I think it's about time I put those rear disks to work for once in their miserable lives.

Just got my pack from Grainger, going to try it out tomorrow.
Anyone had any problems at the drag strip with this upgrade?
Edit, Holy cow, what a difference!

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
Alright guys, I got the springs from Grainger this week and tonight I installed the stiffer of the two springs (1NCF2) on my GTA.
Just a heads up to anyone doing this mod, after I installed the stiffer spring, I had to bleed air out of both the rear AND front lines. There was actually more air in the front lines that there was in the rear. At any rate, after bleeding the brakes thoroughly, the pedal feels good and firm.
My main concern when installing the stiff spring was that I would have TO much pressure to my rear brakes, causing them to lock up before the fronts under heavy braking, since most of the weight is shifted over the front tires under fast deceleration. When I did take the car out on the road, I did a few hard, straight stops. I was very pleased to be able to tell that there was a noticeable decrease in braking distances. When pushed to their limits, the rear tires did start to talk back, around the same time that the fronts started to chirp. Ideally, I would like to see the rears start to lose traction a little bit later than they do in the current setup, but after doing a more thorough test of the brakes, (more moderate to very heavy braking, along with moderate to heavy braking during corners) I found that the rears don't want to lock up to abruptly, and even while braking heavily in the middle of a corner, the car seems to handle well. The extra braking force to the rear of the car does make for a slight amount of oversteer during braking, but I actually like it. The car used to push really bad when braking during a corner, not what I wanted at all. Overall I am very impressed with this mod!
I have stock calipers with cross drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads, so my brakes aren't anything too extravagant, but feel much better than the stock brakes to begin with. The extra braking force to the rear wheels definitely lets the stock braking system work at its full potential.
Not sure if anyone is curious or not, but I included a picture comparing the three springs side by side.
(from left to right: stock spring, 19lb spring (1NCR5), 22lb spring (1NCF2))

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
Will this spring work/help or remove the need to change the PV when swaping from rear drum to LS1? Or would I still need to get a new PV?
Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
I can confirm that the Grainger 1NCF2 is in fact a direct swap-in replacement for the 82-84 cast iron CV's. There is a noticeable stiffness difference between the stock disk/drum spring and this new one. I'm guessing the old feel's about 15/lb but i have no way to confirm an exact lb number.

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
so i happend across this thread today and searched the basement for springs grandpa did lot of pinball machine repair in his day would you believe he had a sorted cabniet of springs by length and strength rating i tested 20,25,28,33,38lb .
all i can say is "thanks grandpa" and here i was about to toss all this stuff
mind you its raining so figured perfect time to test ; 38lb locks the rears every single time you jam on the brakes kicks out bad too so i skipped the 36 and 34 rated; 32 the rears lock almost instantly after the fronts do good but could get hair in a panic stop ; 28 seemed to be the the best as the rears have great stopping power but lock only after the fronts do but not every time very predictible brakeing i couldnt find a 30lb rating in this length
20 no differant then stock prop 25 seemed much better but still couldnt lock the rears even in poring rain but you could feel the rear brakeing effect i may swap back to this
i really shouldnt have stayed up all night doing this got to work now in an hour lol
my brake setup is Corvette c4 12 inch up front and stock 92 fbody pbr rear basicly the 1le setup my front rotors keep getting heat fractures from doing my guess 90 % of the stopping power car im hoping the testing i just did helps somebody

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
Does anyone know if theres a diff for drum prop valve?? I swappped to disx reara but the donor car had a crapped out valve so i havnt had a chance to fix it really. Could this be a small help or should i find a 4disc valve and swap the internal spring for maximized brake performance?? I just need this for a tiny bit as a yeae from now ill be doing a big brake upgrade but it wont hurt getting used to beter brake force for when i get big brakes.

I had a drum proportional valve still in when I did a rear disc brake swap and brakes barely would stop then I put a grainger 1ncr5 spring and now it stops quick. This simple upgrade took like 2 minutes to do and made all the difference in the world.

Yes there is a difference in the proportional valves in the drum and disc brake cars but the spring gives enough pressure to the rear brakes.
