stock brake size question
stock brake size question
i have a 87 camaro that was built with a v6. i am putting a 350 in it. so naturally thinking brake upgrades is one thing on my list of future things to consider. looking at autozones web site the parts for the brakes on both the v6 and v8 have the same part numbers. did the v6 camaro's have the same size brakes as the irocs and z28? now this is just a simple oem question. i know there is stickies going into details about brake upgrades but i am wandering if the camaro's came with the same factory brake setup through all the models

The brakes are the same, regardless of which engine came in it.

Re: stock brake size question
For futher reference the single piston Iron caliper brakes (factory small brakes) are 10.5" rotors, and as James has stated the other performance ones are 11.7" rotors being 1LE.
Steve Millen (Stillen Performance in Costa Mesa Calif) sells great aftermarket support for stock 10.5" brakes. They have very good drilled rotors and Metal Matrix pads that are both combined together make up a VERY VERY good street performance-to-light track duty level while still giving a cold pad performance. Trust me, I highly recommend these purchases IF you are contimplating keeping the factory size stuff. Stay away from Performance Friction or EBC crap. You will have nothing but problems with EBC pads leaving "pad buildup" on the rotors andf that notorious pulsating brake pedal feeling.
Nothing wrong with the 10.5 brakes in stopping power when you have better pads and rotors, BUT there is an INHERIT DEFECT in GM's design that leaves these setups with brake pads rattling in the caliper at very low speeds. There are tabs on the top of the outside pads that need to be bent over but with heat for harder stops they will keep loosing. I changed mine after years of use ONLY to get rid of the ever incuring rattle.

There are other upgrades now that are about the same effort, but let you use more commonly-available parts than the 1LE.
