Parking brake stuck on

hi i was wondering on my 87 z28 how do you get the parking brake unstuck i think it is stuck because i put the lever down and put it into neutral and it will roll backwards with some straining but not forwards, so is there a way to get it unstuck? btw its a old car thats been sittin so it probably wasnt the smartest move engaging it in the first place.

If drum brakes, remove the wheel, and using a brake spoon adjust the adjuster so that you can remove the drum, then figure out why it's sticking, fix, replace drum, readjust adjuster until you just feel resistannce on turning the drum.

Re: Parking brake stuck on

yeah that is going to be a problem because i bought the car about 2 months ago and the rims are aftermarket with like 3 locking lug nuts on each tire and the owner had lost the key, i have an appointment to get them off this Monday but i don't wanna drive down the road with the brake on because you can tell that its on.

Re: Parking brake stuck on

I do not understand why folks use those stupid locking lugs. Buy some freakin' insurance and let them steal the damn rims! There is no rim in the world worth the hassle of those stupid locking lugs. I know - you bought it that way, I'm not ragging you - I just always hate to see those stupid things. Lesson learned for you - when you get them off, trash those stupid things and use regular lugs.

Try one of those sockets with all the little pins inside that are spring loaded - alot of folks get those stupid lock lugs off with them - the pins get forced down into the grooves of the lock and alot of times will get enough grip to get the lugs off.

Unless it's the other kind with weird shaped outeredges instead of grooved inners - for those get the closest socket that just barely won't go on, then pound the socket on with a 5lb sledge forcing the socket over the lug so you can loosen it up, then pry/pound the socket back off the lug before you totally remove it from the stud so you can pound it on the next one.

Good luck!

Re: Parking brake stuck on

yeah i tried all that so and those lugs are like rusted on because the car was a barn sitter so my uncles shop is gonna weld some old sockets on to the locking ones and get them off that way. i dont why the PO put the gay rims on that he did but here in a couple of days ill have the stock ones back on that i picked up because i think they go good with the car.

I don't know if '87 has the equalizer in the transmission tunnel. If it does you could just disconnect the lines there and wire them up until you get it to a shop to have it fixed.

I also agree on locking nuts are a pain. Most shops just hammer on a socket that's about the same size as the lock nut and use an impact on it.

You probably could weld a nut on the outside of the lug and use that to turn it. Soak them with some WD40 or PB Blaster and let it sit over night before you try to get the rusted ones off.
