Caliper Bracket and Info for C4 or 1LE Camino

Good Evening,

I’m planning to start putting my Camino back together this summer. One of my first projects to tackle is the brakes. The current stock setup is 10 ½“ front Disc and Drum rears. I plan to run a Disc/Disc setup using a separate hub and rotor. As I’m going to stick with my Custom Outlaw II 15” rims, I’ll use one of the following options.

12” 1LE Front Disc using a caliper mounting bracket, hub, and rotor hat utilizing the stock spindle modified for the bracket.
Or
12” C4 Non-HD Front Disc using a caliper mounting bracket, hub, and rotor hat utilizing the stock spindle modified for the bracket.
For the Rear Brakes, I’ll go with the C4 setup.

Considering that the 73-77 Camino has the same spindle as the 70-78 Camaro along with all the experience in here, I figured that I would check to see what advice I could get here. Information for most of the conversion is out there already. My main concern is the mounting of the caliper to the spindle. Most of the brackets I’ve seen have been for the C4 conversion including one for a 2nd Gen F-Body C5 conversion. Since the main difference between the C4 and 1LE caliper is the size of the opening, I was thinking that the C4 bracket might work, depending upon the differences between the spindles. From what I’ve been able to find out is the difference in the B-Spindles and A/F-Spindles in the outer bearing size.

Thanks Bill

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have seen the site and web page. I guess I should clarify my questions and intent a little.

I would prefer the 1LE brake upgrade due to the size and thickness of the 1LE rotor. That being said, I would like to modify my current stock spindles to accept a mounting bracket for the 1LE caliper, turn my rotors into hubs and use a rotor hat similar to the 1LE.

In This case, will the C4 bracket work with the 1LE caliper? Also, is there a corresponding hat that I would be able to use with my hubs?

I know that Wilwood makes a kit that fits both the 73-77 A-Bodies as well as the 70-78 F-Bodies. Plus CustomWorks offers a bracket to use the C5 brakes on these spindles.

Thanks
Bill

Re: Caliper Bracket and Info for C4 or 1LE Camino

Good Evening,

After doing allot of research and reading, I ran into a few post stating that the A-2 and A-3 bearings used the same race, the difference was in the inner diameter for the shaft of the spindle. I will check this weekend to see if this is true. If so, Is there any reason that I couldn't use the 1LR rotor with a A-2 outer bearing?

Thanks
Bill

Apparently that was a wild goose chase as the A-2 and A-3 races are completely different.

I did happen across a couple of articles about the use of a C3 rotor in the 70's Impalas. After reading the measurements of the C3 rotor: 11.750" x 1.25", I was wonder if anybody had tried using the C3 rotor/LS1 caliper combination?
