9 bolt iron caliper springs different???

I pulled apart my 9 bolt iron calipers and found the large piston springs are different. One is 3.25 inches and the other 4 inches in length and the shorter one feels stiffer. Is this normal? Is one correct and the other not? Does it matter which side they go on? Everything else looks identical between the two.

Interested, I checked both my Parts & Illustration Catalogues, but neither showed different balance springs.

They looked original too. Does the catalog give the dimensions of the 'standard' one?

One is the spring from the old, flawed design, and one is from the new, "fixed" design.

Wondered if that might be the case.

Info/pics below that might be helpful:

The GM part number listed in the link is still good at GMPartsDirect if you have need.
