99 LS1 Rear Swap. Which Prop Valve?

Really confused from reading threads and threads on which valve to go with. Do I go with a 4th gen or a 3rd gen? I keep getting pointed to this one:
http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i160.html

But then again I hear not.

Really could use some help on this one guys, why don't we have a tech article or sticky on this?

JamesC, Thoughts?

Keep your stock one & judged from there if you think it needs to be changed. some change theirs, most don't.

Mine are rear drums, so I KNOW it needs to be changed out.

So do I just get a stock disk/disk prop valve?

I've seen people even keep the disc/drum valves but if your changing anyways, go for disc/disc.

Re: 99 LS1 Rear Swap. Which Prop Valve?

Here's my general response:

There's no single combination valve that fits all applications (if there were, no discussion would be required); instead there's a combination valve for each of the three braking applications: disc/drum, disc/standard disc, and disc/1LE--each increasing in rear bias. Different part numbers for each valve and so on. Best bet for best braking performance is the correct valve for your application. Or an adjustable.

Since you have an 84, the following is what you need (providing that your 84 has the new style alum block valve):

http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i40.html

You can read more about the combination valves below:

Thanks James.

Why the huge price difference between this: http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i160.html
and this: http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i40.html ?

Re: 99 LS1 Rear Swap. Which Prop Valve?

Note that one is a modification to your valve, the other is a new valve altogether.

Doubtful. It says it's for 86-89 cars without 1LE. You need GM part number 14089496, which is what Ed Miller sells.

Re: 99 LS1 Rear Swap. Which Prop Valve?

I got the valve in and almost all the way installed. One question. The very front line on the prop valve went in at the front of the valve. The new one has that one plugged and there is a new connection on the bottom. Do I run the front line into the front again or into the bottom now?

Sounds like you have the old-style iron valve (note what I say in post #8). If that's so, the threads may be SAE. Double check.

All the other connections went right in. Threaded perfectly. Just wondering about this one connection. Does it come in on to the bottom of the valve now, or the front like it used too.

Re: 99 LS1 Rear Swap. Which Prop Valve?

Im going with bottom since all the pics I can find of the J65 valves have the two lines coming from the top, from the resevor, then one on the back and two on the bottom.

Bottom.

Here's what Dan Burke says about his 84:

"Mine required some relocating of the rear disk brake line: My old combo valve had the line coming in the front, whereas the 1LE piece had it coming in from the bottom of the valve. My existing line bent with no problems."

All installed. Just cleaned everything up. Drove like a dream, amazing the difference in acceleration that new rear made. Brakes are amazing. Never has it braked so smooth and so light on the pedal. Very happy. Just need to tighten my ebrake up a bit. Might be able to get away with tightening it up at the brakes and not have to crawl up under the car again.
