Different rear caliper mounting plates?

I have a 97 LT1 rear with the PBR disc brake setup. I want to put this on a third gen rear. I know the calipers will swap over and in theory the rotors will (wondering about the ABS ring) but my question is will the mounting plate bolt to the old Delco Moraine style disc rear and is it the same thickness. The LT1 caliper mounting plate is about 5/8 - 3/4 inch thick. Can I use this or do I need to buy the mounting plate from somebody like FlyNBye or AndyZ28. I am not planning to change the rotor to a bigger one later as this will barely fit inside my wheel.
I have 3rd gen 28 spline axles to use (carrier will be changed to 28 spline series three).
From what I read the e Brake cables may not work from the 97. It is going in a 91.
Any concerns besides the combination valve?

Re: Different rear caliper mounting plates?

The plates and brakes will be a direct swap if you can drill some holes.
You may need to use some shims to space the caliper bracket over the rotor properly.
You can buy the correct backing plates from any vender if you want to.
No need to worry about the ABS, your car doesn't have it.
The E brake cables you'll need to buy for a 91-92 rear disc car.
Also do some searching and yo will find anything you need.

You may indeed need a shim(s). Note post #18 for a diagram:

Note the shim in post #2 of a link that might have some benefit:

Re: Different rear caliper mounting plates?

Thank you TTop350.
I was wondering because the plates made by Ed Miller or AndyZ28 seem to be only about 3/8 " thick and these are more than 1/2 Inch. I was (oh no) assuming that the axle flange on the fourth gen might be further from the mounting plate on the housing as compared to the 3rd gen. This requiring a thicker bracket.
I know I do not have ABS but I was wondering if that was going to interfere or is that ring on the 4th gen axle. (I suppose I should look, I seen it and assumed it was part of the rotor as the front on my truck, but that is a one piece hub and rotor) Obviously I can not use the fourth gen axle and never had any thoughts of using it. I do know that all the threads say that I can use the fourth gen LT1 discs but did not know if all fourth gen cars had ABS.
Except for the combination valve this sems to be a very straight forward swap with some minor modifications.
I have searched but did not see an answer to the mounting brackets anywhere. That is where I found out that the uncut 97 cables are probably not going to be usable.
As nobody has mentioned, that I have seen, some fourth gen cars had two hoses going from the body to the rear housing. It seems straight forward enough to disconnect all that and put a T in there and run a single line like my original. Is that going to work right?

Re: Different rear caliper mounting plates?

I just did this swap (w a 13" rear rotor) on a friends car and we left the stock drum brake combo valve in it. Works just fine.

the 4thgens with 2lines going to the rear are for 4 channel abs. again, you have a 3rdgen, thats somthing you wont worry about. (If you used those LS brakes you would still use your 3rdgen hard lines.
Use your hardlines or maybe the ones from the 4thgen rear.? seen it done both ways.
We got the rear lines, calipers and ebrake cables used from Hawks, then ordered a 13" rear rotor and adapter bracket with braided stainless lines for the whole car.

Re: Different rear caliper mounting plates?

JamesC, Thank You for those links. I seen in one pic the answer about the thickness and why it isn't a problem. I never could find the pic showing the difference between the earlier backing plate mounting and the PBR backing plate mounting but I can redrill and dremel without a problem. It seems then that I am going to have my posi and gearing and PBR brakes much cheaper than the smaller Delco Moraine discs.
I would have had to get the calipers, and rotors and EBrake cables as well as the posi and gears for that rear. With the 97 rear I have everything except the EBrake cables. I just have alot of swapping and have the carrier clearances checked. Of course I still need to get the combination valve.
Thankfully I have a friend that can set up a ring and pinion properly.
This complete 97 Z28 rear is only costing me $150 and the rotors are still good and clean. I understand about the shims and will plan on ordering a set.
As stated above I have read and searched but missed one of those links. However some of those pics were invaluable.

Re: Different rear caliper mounting plates?

Thanks again TTop350 that just answered the rest of my questions. Between you and JamesC I am confident I will have no problems now doing the whole swap I have in mind. I am very grateful for the information.
I appreciate you taking the time to tell me why this rear had two brake lines there. I feel better about T ing it now.
