Upgrading from my stock J65 brake set up to...

Hey guys,

I've started doing some research to upgrade the brakes on my car. Right now I have the stock 1988 J65 4-wheel disk brake set up with the single piston iron calipers.

I don't race my car on the drag strip or autocross but I do have fun on highways and backroads. I am also going to keep my stock 16'' IROC wheels.

I was looking around on hawks thirdgens' website at brake kits. What do you guys think about these set ups?

I swapped to the 1LE set-up a number of years ago. Though there are many other options, I'm satisfied with the 1LE's.

Ed's shutdown to catch up with orders, but you can not only check his site for the 1LE front and rears, but other options as well.

Front can be purchased from Spohn:

I am in the same boat. I have an '89 Formula 350 with stock disc brakes all the way around that need to be replaced. Are there no kits out there for all 4 wheels, or do I need to buy the front and rear kits separately?? I notice the pictrues of the ILE kits from Hawks look different ... the rear kit's discs are slotted and the front kit's discs are not ... what's up with that??

Re: Upgrading from my stock J65 brake set up to...

Thanks for the advice James. Yeah I want to get the 1LE front brake set up in the front and 12'' rotors in the back with PBR style calipers. Is there a place where you can buy the modified spindles to get the 1LE set to fit? What proportioning valve did you use when you changed your brakes? Did you have to change the brake lines as well?

89 Formula you may just need to upgrade your pads and rotors if you want. The '89-'92 factory J65 cars should have the upgraded Aluminum PBR style calipers and larger 12'' rotors.

My car has the earlier '82-'88 J65 set up so I have the smaller 10.5'' rotors and single piston iron calipers all the way around.

Modifying your own is easy enough. Below are a couple of links that may be helpful:

Since I swapped in both front and rear 1LE's, I used the first-design 1LE combination valve described above. I used braided lines.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I think I am going to get the 1LE set up in front and the '89-'92 PBR set up in the rear.
