Rear PBR Disk, passenger side gets super hot

I have a posi rear swapped into my car with PBR disks. They work great, but I noticed the other day that the passenger side gets really hot. So hot that I can not handle the lug nuts when I remove the wheel. I am running 85-87 IROC rims, and have new center caps. The center cap for that rim will no longer stay on; I am guessing it has been warped because of the heat. The heat is building up fast. I took a 10 mile ride today, with probably 5 complete stops, and I could not touch my finger against a lug nut for more than an instant without burning my finger. I have no clue how long this has been happening. I noticed it about a month ago, and have probably only put 20 miles on it since.

The brakes work great. At first I thought that maybe the e-brake was hanging, but the wheel spins freely when the tranny is put in neutral and the car is lifted.

One more thing, I tried to bleed the brakes on all four corners, but I can not get the bleeder loose on this caliper.

I'm guessing this is not normal. Any ideas why this one side gets so hot? Also, what should I do about the bleeder? Can a mechanic remove this bleeder screw?

It's definitely dragging even if it feels free when you raise the car. Did you check the caliper was centered on the rotor when the brakes were installed? You may need a washer of some thickness between the carrier and the mounting plate to get it centered. That way it has the best chance of the pads contacting evenly. You may find if it's offset one of the pads is always touching the rotor a little too hard.

you can take it to mechanic to remove or
have you tried anti seize spray or heating it up a little

i agree with shiming / spacers only if carrier isnt center on rotor if it is already centered

also for the rear pbr you need to remove and check how well it slides on the sliding dowls .. who know the last time they have been cleaned and grease .. because of that the can stick and cant fully clamp or extend back out and can get uneven pad wear usally on the outer pad and that is the pad that usally drags

Re: Rear PBR Disk, passenger side gets super hot

I wanted to follow up.

So I was going to clean both sides, or at least take a good look. I removed that rear passenger side rim, and noticed that the inside of that rear rim was covered in brake dust. Put the car in neutral, and the caliper was hung.

I bit the bullet, bought two reman PBR rear calipers, two new rotors and new rear pads. Redid everything back there, for well under $300. The results are very much to my liking.

The calipers are getting hard to find. All the auto box stores list the part, but when you try to add it to your cart, it's out of stock. I ended up getting them from Summit. I like Summit, but they have a really crappy core return policy. The calipers had $35/side core, and Summit sends a pre-paid label. In the fine print, they explain that they will deduct from your refund the cost of shipping, based on weight. My calipers were 11 lbs, so it cost me $15. Total core refund was $55

I was lucking and a bought a 10 bolt 342 rear-end with LS1 brakes already installed.
I like the LS rear brakes because the parking brake is better and parts are easier to find.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Rear PBR Disk, passenger side gets super hot

Very often, the reason the one brake is getting hot is, the rubber line that goes to that caliper is bad.

Glad you got it fixed; but there was a significant chance of spending all that money, and not having any effect. (other than getting a working bleeder screw)
