Hard brake pedal issue

My pedal is a little stiff, takes a little more effort to push it down that should. Not extremely bad yet, but not right either. Not a brake expert, but my thought is it has something to do with the booster. Got good vacuum at the line, and don't hear any hissing noise, but I wondered if there were any quick tests or fixes I could try? Anyone ever rebuilt a booster? I have the shop manual, and it looks like it would be a pretty involved job, lots of parts inside there. This issue is on a 92 Formula L98 btw.

Re: Hard brake pedal issue

Can't really rebuild a booster, that I know of.

Not really many parts at all. Primarily, a big rubber diaphragm. Just, never seen or heard of such a thing for sale on the open market.

Might want to check the vacuum line and the plastic check valve thing.

Ok. But in the shop manual it looked like it had an exploded view showing gobs of parts to it. I'll go look at it again. Meanwhile, another poster on a different brake thread said I might just need to flush my lines out. He could be right, I'll give it a try when I get decent weather around here. Thx sofa!

Re: Hard brake pedal issue

Iunno much about "exploded view" or "gobs of parts"... all I can do, is tell you what I see when I take em apart. Just did that to another one a few weeks ago when my son's (S10) died, and he asked the same question, so I popped it apart for him. Not a whole lot to it actually. Feel free to dissect yours after you replace it, all ya gotta do is bend the little parts of the sheet metal on the one half to where they'll allow the tabs on the other to turn, and knock it around a few degrees until the tabs are free to pass through.

It's also not impossible, although not very likely, that all of your rubber hoses are about equally failed and mostly plugged up. If you haven't changed those it'd be a good idea to do so regardless, do a "pre-emptive first strike" on them before they fail at a less convenient time (as things always seem to choose just such a time to fail).

So what do you believe is the actual cause of the hard pedal then? BTW, this pic is what I was talking about.....The next 4-5 pages tell how to overhaul it.

Re: Hard brake pedal issue

Part 20 is what always breaks.

All those little parts are just parts of the servo valve; a bunch of them are nothing but O-rings. Don't know that I've ever seen any of that stuff failed, and I haven't ever tore down one. Every one I ever took apart because it had failed, part 20 was the culprit. Not saying the other stuff "can't" break; only, never seen it.
