85 IROCZ rear disks

I suspect my combo valve in my 85 irocz is not working. The brake light is stuck on and it doesn't appear the rear brakes work much at all. Bleeding the brakes made no difference.
I know the 85 combo valve was a bit of an odd ball. So my question is, will the flynbye combo valve work as a direct replacement on the 85?

Re: 85 IROCZ rear disks

The delco moraine rear discs are notorious for failure. Without the recall kit installed they will not consistently self adjust and will eventually provide no braking effect whatsoever. With the recall kit, they still require daily operation of the parking brake to maintain adjustment between the pads and rotor.

Before replacing the combo valve, I'd verify that the rear brakes are functional. I'd also seriously consider the swap to PBRs if the combo valve requires replacement. The PBRs will work with the disc/drum combo.

Better double check on that combo valve, I do not believe it is the correct one for the earlier cast iron rear discs.

Thanks for the feedback.
Does the recall kit require a full rebuild of the rear calipers?

If so, is that more work compared to swapping to the PBR calipers?
Can you have the stock calipers up front and PBR in the rear?

are delco moraine calipers also referred to as J65?

Re: 85 IROCZ rear disks

J65 was for rear discs, either DM or PBR depending on year.

The recall kit includes replacement pistons and seals.

PBR's rears were installed with the standard front discs, which remained the same throughout the years.

Harder? You may want to look through some of the swap threads on installing the PBR's and decide for yourself.

The combo that the DM's require is getting hard to come by.

Re: 85 IROCZ rear disks

Thanks naf.

I am going to pick up a set of rear PBR calipers from autozone and see if there are a direct replacement fit.

I still suspect the combo valve is a issue because I can not get the brake light to switch off. If I unplug the brake light switch at the combo valve, the light will switch off.

If all the brakes were bleed properly, the combo valve should still work, correct? regardless if the rear calipers pistons are stuck.

What do you think?

They aren't a direct replacement. See the following link for a write-up on the swap:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/faq-...iscs-89-a.html

Your link to the combo valve is the one needed for PBR's—providing your lines are metric (as my 85's were).

BTW, J65 cars, 89-92, were equipped with Delco-Moraines in the front and PBR's in the year. The exception, of course, being 1LE cars.

Should you decide to go the PBR route, the following link provides info on master, combination valve, brake cables and so on:
