Question about calipers

I’m in process of rebuilding/restoring an iroc. Is it worth/possible to rebuild the brake calipers, or should I just replace them? Alternatively, taking them completely apart and just cleaning them?

The cost of replacement seems cheap compared to the labor involved in rebuilding all four of them. Also, I don’t know if rebuilding is possible thru the purchase of kits and such.

Not looking to upgrade the brake system, but more along the lines of returning it to new-like OEM conditions.

let me know what you all think.

Re: Question about calipers
Rebuilding the calipers isn't a very difficult job to do, it's all just a matter of how pitted the caliper bore/piston are... I took all my calipers apart a year or so ago to replace the boots and check for internal corrosion, and ended up completely replacing the fronts because they were badly pitted.

Simple stuff like the boots and hardware are available through RockAuto, they have ACDelco golds or whatever if that's what you prefer. Pistons are also available too, but I couldn't find any that carry the ACDelco gold name if that bothers you. They are quite affordable compared to just buying a whole new caliper, but it's really up to you on the labor cost.

Personally, I'd rebuild them if they're salvageable and you are confident in your ability to do that. I don't know if I trust the new ones all too much, even if my new fronts have held up fine so far. That's just my though

Re: Question about calipers
Nothing wrong with rebuilding calipers, but it might be more convenient to just buy some if the price is right...

Re: Question about calipers
Probably will end up costing about the same either way.

Problems w rebuilding would include messed-up hardware such as bleeder screws, rust, damage/rust n the piston bores, rust, the little rubber bushing things that cushion them on the bolts, rust, and of course, everything will be rusty.

In the 70s & 80s I used to rebuild them ALWAYS because the price of replacing them was MUCH higher, relatively. In 2025, I haven't rebuilt a caliper for ANYTHING (except the rear PBRs on my 83, once) in over 30 years.

Re: Question about calipers
The calipers are neither rare or desirable unless you've got a low miles 1LE car. GM brakes are so cheap, and these cars are so old, I recommend replacing everything from the soft lines forward with new AC Delco.

Re: Question about calipers
agreed on buying calipers from rock auto. the places that rebuild them do it day in day out and have all the right tools and do an excellent job. now, if you have performance brakes package on there, that is a different story. I'd rebuild those myself.
