Brake cables

I currently own a 1991 camaro z28 1LE and I am looking to replace the emergency brake cables.Reason being, they won't hold and sometimes the handle does a free spin when I pull it.
Does anyone know where I can purchase the cables?

Re: Brake cables

AFAIK, Corvette style only on front. J65 on back. I recall reading about brake cable lengths, 2 different sizes out there, and only one works. might look into that.

Re: Brake cables

this cars have the corvette disk brakes
No. It has Camaro/Firebird disc brakes. This is a Camaro/Firebird forum; no one here is impressed with "Corvette" anything. Throwing that word around like we're gonna bow down and worship is a good way to irritate people here. Regardless, those cables are specific to the chassis, as much as they are to the brakes; so no, "Corvette" anything won't work.

My car has both front and rear disk brakes.
Every 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird has front discs. Most have drum rears. 82-88 with rear discs got the old Delco-Moraine setup, with the cast iron calipers; for 89-92 they changed to PBRs with aluminum calipers. That's what you've got.

G92 rpo
G92 is "upgraded gear ratio". G RPOs in general are rear-gear-related, G80 for example is posi, and the ratios themselves start with G, such as GT4 for 3.73. G92 in these cars comes with some other things as well, as an overall "improved performance" sort of package, butt has no effect on the brakes in and of itself, although I've never seen a car w G92 butt not rear discs. Seems kind of silly in any case to order a "performance" package on a car and leave drums back there.

You need the same parking brake cables (cars don't have "emergency" brakes anyway, only the service ones that you usually use to stop the car, and parking ones that you use when you park it) as any other 91 Camaro/Firebird with rear disc brakes. The brake thing that was different about the 1LE option in your year is the fronts; again, instead of the old 60s D-M front brakes with cast iron calipers that had been on all GM cars with discs since the late 60s, with only a few limited exceptions, including most Camaro/Firebird up to 92, your fronts are PBRs w aluminum calipers, similar to butt not "the same as" 4th gen Camaro/Firebird and some Vettes. The same PBR rears were used on non-1LE rear disc cars in your year.

One thing to be aware of is, the parking brake in that system uses the regular brake pads that are the service brakes, not a separate mechanism like lots of newer cars have, such as the "drum in hat" style. Therefore if the pads are worn out or the brakes otherwise need work, the parking function won't work right either. Might want to check all that over real carefully before going down the parking brake cable road.

Did you put parts from a corvette on your car? If so, then if you need to search for corvette parts if you have to replace them.

If you didn't put parts from a corvette on your car, then you wouldn't be searching for corvette cables, you would need camaro cables because that's what your car is.

Re: Brake cables

Did you try adjusting the cable?

It's a bear, have to jack up the body but let the rear end drop as far as possible so that you can reach around the driveshaft and get at the nut. I have a special wrench that I cut in half to be able to fit in the space.
