The difficult decision to sell my 89 Iroc has been made, and the time has come. I was fortunate enough to be able to buy this car 20 years ago, and since then it’s become family. It’s been around longer than my wife, kids, dog, house, and pretty much everything else! It’s been my hobby and obsession for almost half my life. All that doesn’t necessarily speak to what the car is, but hopefully it shows my dedication to the car during those 20 years, the care that it’s received in that time, and the honesty and Integrity that I’ll show during this sale. At the end of the day, it IS business, but if the car receives half the love I gave it in the NEXT 20 years, it’ll have lived a good life!
My goals for this car from the beginning were always to modify and build it in a way that perhaps Chevrolet would have. That’s a pretty loose statement, but my point was for it never to be too extreme. I wanted to be able to drive it. I wanted it to be a FUN car. The TPI and the 383 provide mountains of instant eye popping torque, but that same TPI and 383 ultimately don’t rev too high, and it’s not a quarter mile king. It’s a street car. The 3.42 is about perfect. Highway cruising is still under 2000 RPMs, but there’s lots of shifting! –which is fun! I had a 3.27 and that was pretty good too. With a 3.73 it would just be too much. The car was built to be a FUN street car, and it definitely is.
As of October 2019, I have 2,775 photos of the car going back 20 years. Pretty much every mod and project has been photo documented. I also have all the major receipts and most of the minor ones. I’ll do my best to give you a rundown of all the parts, but if you have specific question, please ask. I’m happy to talk shop about my car!
ENGINE – Drivetrain has about 10k miles. Holley HP EFI, controlling a 2pc. RMS SBC 383. Scat rotating assembly, Lunati Voodoo roller cam and roller conversion, RHS pro action heads, Comp valvetrain and Gold rockers, Darin Dochterman ported TPI base, SLP runners that were cut open, ported and rewelded, matched to a ported plenum.
TUNE – The Holley did an impressive job of self tuning. It was running well after just a few minutes. Some initial idle settings were all I did for the first few weeks. Since then I’ve adjusted the fuel curve a little, tuned the deceleration characteristics a little and done a little more work on the idle, but overall I haven’t done much. I’m not a pro, and it runs great. If it ain’t broke, right!? Someone with more knowledge could likely get more out of it, but it still runs great. I DO have the dash mount 3.5” screen, but I’ll also include an old laptop with the software and all my previous tunes, though I don’t know why you’d ever need them.
TRANSMISSION – Tremec TKO 600 w/ .64 5th gear. Inland Empire 3.5” driveshaft. Pro 5.0/Hurst shifter
EXHAUST -SLP headers and Hooker Maxflo muffler. Dyno Don 1.75 headers and 3.5 Y pipe are included in the sale. Just not installed.
REAR – GM thirdgen F body with 4th gen Torsen 3.42 differential. Hawks/TA girdle.
CHASSIS/SUSPENSION – UMI Adj.LCA’s and relo brackets. Adj. Panhard Bar. Adj. Torque Arm. Trans Xmember. Subframe Connectors. Stock Iroc sway bars. Ground control Weight Jacks on all four corners with Tokico HP shocks and Struts. Jamex strut tower brace. Rear brakes are stock PBR’s, Fronts are 4th gen “LS1” brakes. All corners have new pads, rotors, calipers and flex lines inside 1 year. New Borgeson Steering box has less than 500 miles on it.
BODY – The car was painted in the fall and winter of 2017. Before taking it to the shop, I re aligned both fenders, both doors, hood and front bumper cover. That was a pain, but worth every minute. Gaps are right there with factory fit and finish. The car was painted at Lawson’s Speed and Custom. The owner and I are now friends, and I personally have a few hundred hours in prep work, going to the shop on nights and weekends. I left the final prep work, painting and clear, and the cut buff and polish to the pros. That’s not my handiwork. The engine wasn’t removed, but the hood, hatch, front bumper and all ground effects were removed for paint. During assembly, I also installed all new emblems, a new windshield, headlights, fog lights, and weather stripping. The “T” bar was actually in pretty good shape, but it was removed, sanded, prepped and POR 15’d for good measure. Driver door hinges and pins were installed as well. Inner fender liners are also new. As always, I have photos of all the work.
INTERIOR – The car was an original Medium Beechwood (Tan) cloth interior car. I wanted to go with leather, but in 89 the “Leather” option wasn’t fully leather. It had a light brown tweed stitched in with the leather. As it stands now, all the leather is the same factory color, placement and stitch patterns as original. The tweed has been replaced with a tan and brown houndstooth, and it looks amazing. Seats also have new foam, and they very comfortable. They’re stock seats though, so these ain’t Recaros. Covers were done wonderfully by Princess at Lethal Interiors, and installed locally by Chuck at Upholstery Express.
WHEELS and TIRES – The wheels and tires are brand new Hawk’s Motorsports reproduction 17x9 Iroc rims with Continental Extreme Contact 275-40-17 tires. They have less than 50 miles on them. Original gold 16" Iroc wheels are in GREAT shape with stock gold paint with polished faces. Most of the pics still show these wheels as the new ones are so new. They still have good rubber, although they are about 8 years old. They're included in the sale.
….and countless other odds and ends. Car Motorsports floor mats. New Borgeson steering box. 4th gen cooling fans and shroud. 4th gen window sweeps. New wipers, arms, motor and spray pump. All bulbs are new. New door handles. Rebuilt and reinforced hatch pulldown unit. New window switches . New leather wrapped steering wheel. Recalibrated factory tach with adjustable board. Pioneer CD player and Clarion EQ. Pioneer speakers in factory locations run off Rockford Fosgate amp. Wiring in place for sub and amp, but never purchased.
I’m lucky that I’ve been able to own a car like this that is NOT my daily driver. Unfortunately adding ANOTHER non daily driver isn’t in the cards, and I have other cars I’ve dreamt of owning and building. This Iroc has provided so much to me over the past 20 years, but it’s time to move on. It was tough deciding to sell it, but here we are. I don’t HAVE to sell, but I did write this after all and I WOULD like to sell it and move on. I’m open to reasonable offers.
...and there are literally THOUSANDS more pictures showing just about every mod and project I've made to the car! Just ask!
Re: 89 Iroc Z - Fully Built. 383/TKO HolleyEFI, new paint, leather, wheels tires, etc
Thanks for the compliments guys!
As for what car will be next? Wow, I dunno. I'm enjoying the decision making process though! Driving everything I can. It's not as much about which car, but what kind of project. -or if it's a project at all. I'd LOVE to build a Factory Five Cobra, but I'm not sure my place in life is ready for that. Specifically the time. Modern muscle is mighty attractive, but will I get tired of not turning wrenches? I dunno, we'll see. I'm taking my time with this. No rush.
Re: 89 Iroc Z - Fully Built. 383/TKO HolleyEFI, new paint, leather, wheels tires, etc
Curious how those SLP runners perform after being cut open and ported? Looks like a nice job was done on them as well as the rest of the car!
I couldn't really tell you honestly. I make no excuses for this set up, but bottom line is the TPI is for fun and for looks. A stealthram would definitely dyno more power. Stoplight to stoplight though, this thing is a beast! Which is why I built it this way.
Re: 89 Iroc Z - Fully Built. 383/TKO HolleyEFI, new paint, leather, wheels tires, etc
IMO as nice of a Third gen build I've ever saw. I like that you stayed TPI and that it doesn't have coil packs on it If I had the $ this car would be mine i think it's priced very reasonable and just a super car. GLWS.
Re: 89 Iroc Z - Fully Built. 383/TKO HolleyEFI, new paint, leather, wheels tires, etc
Hate to see you letting it go, always hoped I'd get a chance to see it in person again at Auto Fair or something in it's current state. Good luck with the sale and here's secretly hoping you change your mind and keep it.

LOL....well I'm at the point where I have to TRY! ....but if it doesn't sell in "X" amount of time, I'm sure you'll see me modding away some more. I can't KEEP it, and NOT mod it, as nothing is ever truly "finished". I'll miss not moving to another type of car, but keeping it would never be a bad thing!
Re: 89 Iroc Z - Fully Built. 383/TKO HolleyEFI, new paint, leather, wheels tires, etc
woah, when I saw this post I said NO WAY, hes not serious!!!!. Then as I read it, I realized, wow, he really is. I have always enjoyed following along with your car and the modifications over the years and you have a great knowledge to share here too. best of luck wit the sale. I hope it all works out for you.
Re: 89 Iroc Z - Fully Built. 383/TKO HolleyEFI, new paint, leather, wheels tires, etc
Any dyno numbers or estimated HP numbers? Thanks.
I followed a similar build several years ago that made 450+ with a miniram and similar cam. My TPI definitely drops that number, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this car putting down 335 to 350 to the wheels. But honestly I'm not sure. I know low end torque can hide actual power numbers pretty well, and it's got plenty of that!
Re: 89 Iroc Z - Fully Built. 383/TKO HolleyEFI, new paint, leather, wheels tires, etc
Can you provide anymore engine specs? Which crank, rods and pistons does it have exactly? All forged? What are the cam specs? What size heads and compression ratio? Thank you.
