Trying to decide what CAR I want...
I'm a high school student, and I've been working at A&W saving all my paychecks. I started seriously saving around September or so. To this date, I have $3601 saved. I'm pretty hell bent on getting a third-gen!
So far, what I know I want:
T-tops
V8
Here's the thing, all cars in my area are DRAMATICALLY overpriced. I looked into importing a car from Florida, according to a few companies, the rate seems to be just under $2,000...
I want a car for this summer, around the end of June would be good timing. I've been looking extensively on this one, and it's a member of this board's car:
1982 Pontiac Firebird - Jeff's Pontiac "KnightHawk"
$2800
I was looking at an IROC-Z on Ebay that looked very nice. Interior was nice, and so was the exterior. Engine made me want to hurl:
I'll be courteous, since the biggest image is 800x600 and provide a link
Outside

Engine

That scares me
The car went for $3100 ish on Ebay. It was kind of local to me.
The value of these cars is much higher here. I saw a nice 88 Trans Am from Florida in the classifieds with a 355 engine, t-tops, pretty much mint for $1750
Also, I'm not mechanically inclined, but I do have some, but limited access to a garage.
I honestly can't sum up 2 years of wanting one of these cars in one post... so if you have any questions about what I want. Just ask me

5000 should get you the thirdgen you want with the least amount of problems. Don't skimp out timewise just to get the car. Wait until you find the creampuff - and by then you'll have the money. These will nickel and dime you to death - and this is minimized when you find one with less issues.

I would go with a car that has TBI. I am saying this for insurance reasons. I am an 18 year old with a 6cyl. RS. I'm paying around $140 a month for insurance through Allstate. And that is with good student and driver training discounts. A friend of mine (before he got 6pts on his license) was paying close to $200 a month for insurance with good student discount for his TBI Firebird. So, I would go after a TBI Iroc myself, an original 6cyl, or TBI car with a 350 swap.

That seems to be a pretty good deal. From it's pic, it looks nice and clean, it already has some mods done to it, and just barely over your price range.(well a week or two of work)

I've looked into buying a car from the States. I just can't...
BTW, this is $3600 CAD, not USD... I need money leftover for insurance and registration and all that other BS that comes with buying a car.

Stay away from anything TBI. You will end up with a 2.73 open rear and a motor/suspension that is worthless. I would purchase a WS6 car that is preferably a 350 TPI. You will regret buying anything less than that in the future.

You're right about the, "not good at giving advice" part. A lot of people on these boards like to talk about things they know nothing about
The most BS seems to be in the, "Steet racing" forum. Probably because the majority of posters there seem to be my age
