Steering column, different years... problem?

This is my first post, and I joined because you all seem to be quite knowledgeable, and I have a question. It starts with a story, so bear with me, the question is coming up.

I bought a 1982 Trans Am 'project' car for $200 about an hour from my house, went to pull the rims off to get the tires filled, balanced, and then tow it back to town with my van. Problems arised when I think I cracked the rusted frame simply by trying to jack it up high enough to get the rims off. So, now I've got a 1982 PARTS car sitting about an hour away from my house.

Now, I just bought a 1986 Trans Am 5-speed 350 from a friend of a friend... rebuilt 20k ago, the body is immaculate, and the frame is almost perfect. $2500 Canadian. But, this car was stolen in the past, the thieves ripped open the steering column and started the car with a tire iron. The question I have is will the steering column from the 82 fit into the 86, or should I head over to the parts yard to find an 86? I heard from a friend that a lot of the parts for third gen birds are interchangeable, and I was hoping someone could give me some insight into my situation. I'll post some pictures of the 86 Trans Am as soon as I can, and post the specs too.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

the columns are swappable from 82-92 i pulled one out of an 82 camaro for my 88 iroc and it still works great. Only difference through the years would be the steering wheels.

Thought you should know that when I pulled the two columns out, they were about 3 millimetres off, so now I need to go over to the parts yard to get another one. Thanks for the response though, I appreciate it. I am, after all, new to third generation birds, so I'll probably need more help in the future.
