UPS delivered a couple of packages for me on Thursday. I live in the country so I had them deliver to a building I work at occasionally. They dropped it off and someone signed for it, fine. But there was a 98 dollar fee they were supposed to collect COD for brokerage and gst. They haven't called me or anything. Can I expect it as a x-mas present from UPS? Or are they going to hunt me down like a dog? I would love to stick it to the man, And there BS brokerage fees!

Be patient they will find you.
You will get the invoice in the mail.

Yea, and if you don't pick up the invoice, you'll probably get away with it. I have a few that I never paid for that way. They threaten collection agencies and whatnot, but at the time I was 16 so I didn't care...
They actually did that to me a few months ago, I paid for the part via credit card, which expired at the end of the month. They charged the (now non-existant) card 2 months later, had no luck, then sent me a letter complaining. I didn't feel like sticking it to them this time, for their continued dedication to utter incompetence, but instead just paid them...
Hey Will, where out in the sticks do you live? And also, do you know of any farm auctions going on in the near future? I'm trying to source a used (ie. cheap) 12-15hp engine, like a ride-on lawnmower engine, that type of thing.

Letting it go to collections is a bad idea. It will haunt you when you try for a mortgage or any other large loan. I had a friend once that got denied his first attempt for a mortgage for a $2XX ticket he got in Sask that he never paid. Its not an easy thing to reverse once somethings gone to collection either.
I try and ship through USPS whenever possible. Actually I request it. If the sellers says no then I really reconsider whether I want that part from them. No stupid border fees and they'll drop it off at your door. I have had a few things sent through them now from injectors to intake manifolds and they've never lost or damaged anything.

Yeah I don't like dealing with UPS. They left TWO Lcd computer monitors on my front step. One box was plain but the other had a picture of the lcd and a huge picture on the front in case would be theives couldn't read...
I even left instructions on the invoice saying the garage would be open and to put it in there. But nope. Front step it was. Just glad I live in a decent neighbourhood.
I ordered a Torque Converter from Edge and even they suggested I go USPS. I'm going to try what Scamo (ironic name no? hehe!) does in the future from now on.
Wanted to add a point to having something go to collections. Just like Duratys says it's a very bad idea. I had one thing go to collections because of an accounting mix up and every time I went for a loan I had to bring along that paperwork saying it was clear and paid because the collection goes on your record for 7 years. And that goes from Car loans to line of credit loans to everything. It even raises your interest rates in some places, or at least gives them a reason to try to.

Very Good Advice...it will come back to haunt in the future. Even a small amount not paid will cause a reduction of your credit score and you will be considered a risk to banks etc. Yes, the UPS brokerage fee is a total rip, one way to try to avoid it is by using USPS.Originally Posted by Duratys

How can I pay them if they don't ask for it? They haven't called me or anything. As for credit I have a mortgage and excellent credit.
Sonix I live east of Red Deer on an acreage, as for auctions check montgomery auctions.com they always have crap like that.
I always ask for usps but some people only use ups. I hate them so much that's why I want to stick it to them.
If they ask for it I'll pay.

Check for a COD envelope stuck to the package. If it's not there, you'll get an invoice in the mail.Originally Posted by WillSpeedy

Ok, I have a change to make on my previous statment about no customs fees with USPS. lol I got a slip in my mailbox saying that my package had arrived (a cam I had sent thriough USPS from the states) and that I could pick it up at my closest shoppers drug mart post office. But it said that I owed 40 bucks!!!??? So when I picked it up I asked the lady why I owed money and why I had to pick it up. I explained that I've never had to pay when sending things through USPS, that they always just drop it off in between my two doors and I also explained why I stopped having things sent through UPS. She said well you ALWAYS have to pay with UPS because they have brokers at the border who check EVERY package so they can get your money. Where as USPS/Canada Post only check randum packages. She said it's like crossing the border, they may decide to check every green car one day/hour and then every red car the next. Just like packages they may check every package from Florida one day and then every package from New York the next. So it's hit or miss through USPS, but I've had many things shipped to me and this is the first time that I've had to pay. I'll take my chances with them because anything is better then paying 60 - 80 dollars EVERY time through UPS!!!!

You pay with USPS, too... Canada Post will collect GST/HST/PST on behalf of Canada Revenue, on the declared value of the package. If it's a gift, or if the declared value is less than something like $25, then they don't bother collecting. The difference is that Canada Post only charges about $4 for the service. The "random" part is that some packages will be opened and inspected to see if their contents match the declaration, and if the value seems to make sense. If the customs inspectors think you're trying to pull a fast one, they'll levy taxes on their assessed value.
yea USPS charges you the gst and like a 5 dollar fee instead of 60.
So far through USPS I have had AS&M runners, accel lower intake, injectors, a throttle body, and some interior pieces shipped. All of which have been dropped off at my door and with no extra charge be it tax, customs, whatever. This cam is the first item that has been the opposite. Maybe I have just been fortunate and if so, I hope it keeps up.
