Re: Anyone run rotella t4 15w 40

I use it in all my older motorcycles. Keeps wet clutches happy and cams intact. So far so good after about 20 years of use in my 82 magna

I used it in my TA but the 5w-40 synthetic version for a while to help with my flat tappet cam. I emailed Shell and they said minimum 1200ppm ZDDP and 1100 phosphorous in the current formulas 15w-40 10w-30 and 5w-40

That is a MYTH.
The ZDDP levels have been reduced in Rotella as well, since modern diesel engines have catalytic converters now...

Re: Anyone run rotella t4 15w 40

That is surprising I see it everywhere from autozone to walmart. If you got castro edge and have a flat tappet cam I hope you bought a ZDDP additive.

That is what I heard also. I just choose a good oil and use a ZDDP additive.
That way, I know it's in there.

Re: Anyone run rotella t4 15w 40

Very interesting blog with a lot of good information, I've only used amsoil for a very long time, dominator oil but after reading this I'm switching to Signature Series.

I've never saw Rotella in 10w30. I know a lot of folks swear by it in older high mileage engines though.

Re: Anyone run rotella t4 15w 40

Although I like to use an additive with flat-tappet cams, the level of ZDDP in today's motor oils has been reduced to the same levels as in the 1960s. It has not been completely removed...

Re: Anyone run rotella t4 15w 40

I went on Mobil website and Mobil 1 recommended 15W-40 for my '82 LU5 trans am !!!

For now, it runs fine on Mobil high mileage Syn-Blend 10W-40 with rislone ZINC additive

Re: Anyone run rotella t4 15w 40

I know this is old but amsoil z rod is the best oil you can get for flat tappit cams. Rotella is ok but has high ash content turns black fast meets minimum requirements. Mobile 15w40 is better cause its synthetic but still only meets minimal requirements and is about $15 per bottle last time I checked. Amsoil exceeds minimum requirements is synthetic and costs less than mobile 1. Also amsoil posts all their oil tests vs their competitors on their website so you can learn anything you want about their products and their competitors. They post real data, whether they are strong or weak in a particular category you will get real world info not marketing claims. I'm am not affiliated with amsoil I don't work for them I just wanted to share what I've learned in my research over the last 2 years.
