Build lightweight box from ???

I just bought 1 MTX thunder 4000 12" sub and it came in a sealed box about 3/4" thick, it's heavier than I want.

Is there any other kind of wood(or other inexpensive material) I can build a lighter box from without giving up sound quality or bass?

I want to stay away from fiberglass.(I prefer wood).

Yes their are alternatives. The cheapest would be to build a custom box using mainly fiberglass.

The next best thing would be ultra light MDF, its 1/3 the weight of normal mdf, but costs more and is a lot harder to find.

There is some stuff called Divinycell or something spelled like that, that is really light, but very expensive.

Thanks. Yes I did do that myself just this past christmas holidays and I am going to redo it again this summer.

As far as getting one built, just check out local shops. Ask to see some photo's of their past work (most good reputable shops keep a log of their work). Go around and get various shops to give you an estimate. Prices can vary from ~$150-$3000 depending how crazy you want it.

I have made how-to's on what I did on my webpage. Just follow my sig and go to the stereo install link for the how to's and more pictures link for my webshots account, then go look through the pics of the install 1 and install 2 folders.

Go here for a bunch of fiberglassing and general install links.

1/2" is too small...

There is some type of plywood that does work, but people usually get 1" or thicker of it. Its not the normal plywood you use for construction, and i don't remember the name, maybe someone else here knows it.

MDF is your best bet though, like $15 for a 4'x8' sheet. If you can find 3/4" ultra-light mdf that would be good, I don't know how much it costs though...

Lightweight = more $$$. no way around it....
