installed amp, now i hear a whine

i just installed an mtx 5 channel amp (5400) and while the back two channels were being wired up it sounded good, but as soon as the front two speakers were hooked up, i started noticing a whine coming from all 4 speakers - i ran 2 guage wire back to the amp from the battery - and also replaced my alternator wire with 2 guage as well - did i inadvertantly take out some sort of filter for the electricity when replaceing the alt wire? how do i fix this?

where are the gains at on the amp? move them all the way down, set the volume on your head 1/2-2/3 to max volume and see if the noise goes away, if it does, then just slowly raise it (with a/c, lights, etc on) until you hear noise, distortion, or its louder than you will ever want it.

If that doesn't fix it, there are several other things to check next.

hmm - i didn't think about that - i set the gains between halfway and full gain - it was about the same level as where the original headunit was - but the front speakers (boston acoustic 4x6) have popped 3 times rather loud - i just figured i had the bass turned up too loud - i'll check that next..

When my ground wasnt quite "grouinded" I got a whine from all four speakers. You might want to check that also.

run your rca's down the other side of yoru car. keep them as far away from your power wires as possible. atlest 18". if that doesnt do it, try a ground loop ioslator.

turns out the gain was a bit too high - backing it down a notch or two took care of the whine! thanks
