Head Unit Question

The factory Head units in our cars do not have brackets if i'm correct. It pretty muchs sits back in the center console? I'm thinkin of going ahead and getting an aftermarket unit that fits in the stock location. Any suggestions on what i should get? How hard is it to put the other size head units in my car. I know i would have to bolt in the bracket kit i guess. Problem is my car did not come with a radio so there isn't much hardware in there. I have a 1991 Z28 1LE. Came factory (i think) without a radio. At least it didn't have one when i bought it.

There is a little metal rail that the back end of the stereo rests on, tucked away under the dash. If you are getting a regular-sized (DIN) stereo, you will need an adaptor kit to make it fit, as the stock stereo's in Chevy/GM are DIN-and-a-half sized. Also, be careful what adaptor kit you get...the kit that WAS in my Camaro caused the stereo to stick out about 3-5 inches, and kinda looked like ***. I fixed that, though...put in a stock cd player from a 96 Impala.

Alpine makes a DIN 1.5 unit that fits perfect.

The only install issue was the power antenna. The Alpine unit didn't have enough power for the stock setup. A simple relay fixed it.

If you go to about any car audio shop and ask them for a HU installation kit for your car they should have what you need. If they have more than one then ask them to explain the differences. Buy one and open it up and read over the instructions while you are still in the shop. If you are confused about anything then ask them to explain it to you.

So there is no installation whatsoever for our original factory size stereo's? It just sits back in the opening? What is an HU installation kit? I won't need one if i get a factory size aftermarket head unit right? Thanks for all the info. Later.

I've never installed an aftermarket 1.5DIN HU in a 1.5DIN opening so I can't really answer your question. I assume the HU would come with a bracket to facilitate mounting it in a similar fashion as the stock HU. I don't think you'd need a kit.
