15 year old Bose system- how to add sub
15 year old Bose system- how to add sub
Let me say this before I ask my question....
I have been into electronics and car stereo for the past 15 years. I know my way around so to speak....
Anyhow, I have my stock Bose cassete player in my IROC and want to keep it for security reasons. I want to add a RF CD changer and a sub amp & sub. I have 2 JL 10w4's that I could use both or one of. I have learned in the past few years that too much bass is bad for the ears and pisses off the neighbors and people in traffic, so for practical reasons I'm not looking for BIG BASS.... I just want sub bass to fill in the frequencies that I'm missing.
What would be the best/easiest/cheapest way to get a signal from the head unit to the amp? I think I'm going to mount a single 10 in the spare tire compartment and vent it to the passenger compartment.
Thanks in advance for your help and ideas.

Thanks for all of the replies!
I knew I could count on thirdgen.org people to answer the questions that nobody else can!
I know, if its not thumpin' bass you know nothing about it

uhh...well my freind has a 93 ford ranger with the stock head unit w/amp&sub, and what they did is spliced a standard RCA cord on each of the speaker output wires on the headunit's wiring harness....I've never seen how/what they did, just what he says, but it is definatly the stock headunit, and he definatly has an amp hooked to it.....hope it helps!

Here's how you add a sub, in 4 easy steps.
1. Rip out old Bose system
2. Throw Bose system in trash
3. Install an aftermarket head unit
4. Install an amp and a sub
Sounds harsh, but you'll get a much better system. My girl had a bose in her '93 Camaro, and it sucked. I flipped the Bose stuff, and installed a full system. With "just" a head unit, speakers, and an amp for the inside speakers (NOTE: No subs yet), she had more bass than the Bose system ever gave out.
Then I added another amp and the subs... wow.

"For security reasons", you could add the aftermarket radio underneath the dash, or the seat, or etc. Maybe you want to cut your Bose up so you have just the faceplate, sink-mount the new head unit into the dash, and use the Bose faceplate as a "theft-deterrant cover".

I have a really sweet Kenwood HU, amp and JL 10's. Now all I need is 6x9's and 4x6's and another amp.....
i'd say go with line level converters. My pioneer has speaker level inputs, and you can find them at most stores. They convert the speaker leads into a RCA plug. Not the best sound in the world but it works.
