Do i really need a subbox?

I have 2 Jl w0's and a Jl 250 watt mono amp... I have the sub in a custom box " top" right now that just sits in my car's trunk, work rather well in my opinion b/c it is loud...So do i need a box b/c i think it's using the entire trunk as an enclosure and the air vent on the side of the paneling to breath I dunno
Questions comments, and solutions happily accepted

Not to mention that even if you got it leak proof, then you still have to accept the fact that the plastic panels would vibrate like crazy since they would flex a ton under pressure. Just build a box and enjoy the much better sound quality.
