Just thought I would post the subwoofer enclosure that I made. This enclosure is just shy of 1000 cubic inches, only takes up 1/2 of the trunk's well and sits flush with the shoulder in the well. It is made of 3/4" MDF and uses Poly-fill. The top board I made longer so it sits right on top of the shoulder of the well. I believe that along with recessing the woofer down into the box looks a little nicer when done this way. The box houses an 8" MB Quart subwoofer (http://www.mbquart.com/mbquart_refer...ubwoofers.html) very well and falls within their requirements of 1/4 to 1/2 a cubic foot of air space. Most 8" subs are similar requirements. I can definitely hear the sub in the car but it will not shake walls or cause noise complaints. It is run by a 300 Watt RMS amp that is hidden and mounted along with an Equalizer in the spare tire area.
I never realized how faded the carpets were becoming until I pulled back trim and then put this box in. Big difference.
Sub box looks GREAT, plus you still retain some storage room. Also, I agree, the recessed sub making it level with the top board is such a small and subtle change but makes a big difference.
As for your carpet, yeah it's faded pretty bad. Check out my thread, I just purchased some carpet dye that came in a spray can, was super easy to use. I ended up changing carpet color from grey to black and it came out great. You should have no issues going faded black back to black.
@JWFirebird - In a previous Camaro, I had a single 10" in a box similar in size, with a mono 200W RMS amp powering the sub. With the tops off, window down, 75 mph on the highway, I recall having a hard time hearing the wind over the stereo!
Maybe a little exaggeration, but a quality amp and decent sub and enclosure like this will go a long way. A lot of subwoofer/stereos featured on TGO are overkill (not that that is a bad thing , but are more suited to SPL competitions than a great sound quality system that is practical for a daily driver.
looks good, can you still hear it with the tops off and windows down? thinking of doing something similar, most of my driving is 55 with it open
I have the bullet style muffler hooked up to a 383 and even then at 70 mph at ~2000 RPM with the T tops off and windows down on a 4 lane highway I could hear the 8" sub easily at ~1/2 volume.

Agreed. I definitely hear a punch with this and can feel it at some volumes and that is all I need. I don't want to have to turn down my stereo every time I see a police officer or worry about it being broken into when parked.
Do you have dimensions you can give me? I'm going to use a 10" sub and I know I'd have to alter them a little, however what you've done is what I'm looking for.
I think I used these as my build dimensions. It doesn't fit together as it is displayed. The front and back of it are angled because the well is angled inward as you go down into the trunk. I didn't make it as three separate sections as shown, each side is one board. I only displayed it that way to show measurements and be able to do interior volume math easier. The dimensions are all interior dimensions, not exterior. It fits *snug* once carpet is on it, so snug that I don't need any bolts to hold it down. If you wanted it held down a few pieces of the hook side of velcro on the bottom and front side of the enclosure would be enough.
I appreciate you getting back with me. I just noticed when you made the recess, you used a smaller board and screwed it to the top to get that recess-pretty smart. Did you have someone carpet it for you? I've carpeted square boxes but that flange appears to be difficult, if so, how did you do it? Did you use that flange area to mount an amp? I was also thinking of making a tube type enclosure so the rain wouldn't be a problem when opening the hatch getting on the speaker, any problems with that?

I applied the carpet myself. Remember that the only visible part will be the top and side facing the open part of the well so those are the only areas that need to look good. I still applied carpet to the sides and most of the bottom but i didn't worry about getting it perfect because it is not seen. I sprayed the box with adhesive and stapled the carpet where it wouldn't be visible. As for rain being a problem, I can't speak to that. I guess any speaker placed in the rear may be problematic with rain. If its raining maybe just don't use the trunk?
