What do you think about 8"s
What do you think about 8"s
I'm tired of my 12s. They weight a lot and box takes up a lot of room. I don't need 140 db sound either. I just want enough to know that I have something back there. That's why I was thinking about going with 2 8s in my B pillars, where the 6x9s are now. I've done a lot of fab work, so I know I can fit them in there with the right sized box. I just want to know why no one carries them in stores, just not enough demand? Do they sound like crap? Here's a link to what I have now.

I've heard 8's in a bandpass sound amazing for midbass and higher subbass notes (about 50hz and up). I have yet to hear any that sound good at low frequencies though.
I have used Boston Pro series 8's before(2) and they sounded awesome. I am currently running 3 JL Audio 8's and I love them too. To my ears, 8's sound a lot tighter and more defined than larger drivers.

Good luck putting a Cerwin Vega in the side pods, look up the space even those small 8's are supposed to have, maybe look for a set of the older 88800 Aluminum cone eclipse Monkey ? I almost went with 2 and a single 10 in the middle a while back.

I had 2 8's before i got my 2 10's. They were Fosgate's and i believe they were the classic series! Anyhoo, they were in truck boxes that were ported and i had them wedged in my well in the back and I loved them! I had to ditch them tho after i found out they were stolen!!
I couldn't believe how tight they sounded and how well they hit!! Good luck!

Yeah that's the biggest problem I'm seeing is my depth isn't going to be big enough. I still want them in there, just to see if I can. I might have them hanging out a little bit with a grill over them. I feel sorry for anyone riding in back. Nothing like having a woofer six inches from your ear.

Try Radio Shack. I have their speakers for my room, dual 8's. They sound great and are very slim, like 3". The ones that I have are meant for home use, 8" woofers, 3" mids, 1" tweeters. Before I bought my Pioneer 12" woofer, I set them back there and tried them out and they sounded great in my car too, better than my single 12". Also, they don't need much volume to sound good. I would have left them there in there home stereo box, because they fit perfectly in the back area but then i wouldn't have speaker in my room. They were $80 for the two boxes, 3 speakers for each box. They also sell very similar 8" woofers for cars, like $30 each, I would highly recomend them.
I tend to stay away from radio shack as much as possible. I don't think I can screw up for $60 unless someone has a better deal. When I do this I'll do my best to post pics and give box dimensions. Thanx for the help.

go to www.buyloud.com they have some gret prices and a really good selection. i lost my 2 12 mtx 8000s and a rockford 500 watt amp for one of the 8 inch vegas like earlier in this post i got a 8 inch bazooka bass tube for 10 bucks at a pwn shop and put the vega in it it sounds really good for a cheap system
Getting started now. I went to the shack, mostly because I like to buy in person. The 8s there are ok. 200 peak watts 100 RMS. $29.99 ea. They don't have the poly cone, it's some kind of fiber stuff, and they have optimus mags. .5 ft^3 for a sealed enclosure is what they recomend. I measure my hole, and it's going to be close. A fiberglass enclosure would work really great here, and is what I will probably end up doing. The stupid rear wheel well has a hole in it and I had mud splatter on the underside of my plastic, so the fiber will seal that up too. The mounting depth is more than enough with these speakers. Since I'm using glass, I probably won't have the cut the sheet metal, just drill some more holes. I really hate fiberglass, but it looks like that's my best option right now.
For $30 I expect them to barely work. A friend of mine got the same subs in the "buy an amp get free subs deal" They aren't the worst, but they're a far cry from vegas or anything else really good like that. I'm not expecting to push more than 100 watts anyway.
I have 2 8's
I have to 8 inch rockford XLC's with a rockford amp. I think they sound really good in the back of my bird. They are each in a single sealed box and fit right in the bottom of the cargo area. The hit pretty low and vibrate the back of my set so im happy
Well, I glassed in the drivers side last night. It still needs a couple more layers, but I was running out of daylight and the fumes were really starting to get to me. I don't have a digital camera, so I have to do it the old fashion way and scan them in. Pics in a week.
Dont waste your time and money with 8" subs! You wont be happy with them. I'm speaking from experience. I had two 8" Infinity Kappas to try to conserve space and was NEVER happy with the sound. On the advice of two of the guy's I respect most on this board ( Jim and Polecat ) I built a box and went with two 10's ( Infinity Reference ) and I love the way they sound! Tight, clean, hard hitting BASS!

Well, too late. I know what you're saying, but I'm not going for a huge sound, like I'd get out of 10s or 12s. I've been down that road. The box was around 40+ lbs and took up all of my room in the well. Plus, the bigger the speaker, the more dependent your sound is on a good amp. That's why I got this brilliant idea (my amp is not so good). Anyway, I finished glassing in the B-pillars and had to make a sheet metal/wood combo speaker mount. I had to cut the original speaker holes just a tiny bit to properly clear the 8s. I drilled a hole to run the wire and in classic box building style used an abundance of silicone. I really like the way they sound, it's not a huge sound, but it's almost right by my head, so it doesn't have to be. It still sounds really tight even after buying the $30 Radio shack special Optimus speakers and running my Urban Audio amp. This hole project was an experiment in seeing if it could actually be done. I'm computer technology impared, so I'll try and get some pics as soon as I can.
$45 - 1 gal of resin & 3 packages of glass a box of latex gloves and disposable brushes (pep boys)
$60 - 2 100rms 200 peak optimus 8" speakers (radio shack)
$20 - sheet metal (jc whitnety, could spend a lot less here)
$0 - left over amp , you could spend less than $100 here easy.
$10- misc screws silicone etc.
If you still want to run the original 6x9 4x6 setup it would be really easy to make a cargo cover and mount the 6x9s in there instead of using the Bose like I did. I kept all of my room, and still have a more than decent sounding system, which was the whole goal.
Things I learned-
1) when glassing over open spaces do it in several layers allowing the previous layer to dry first. Do not rush this part, the glass will sag under its own weight and you can sacrifice the seal.
2) Plan on spending about a week doing this if you have a 9-5 job.
3) Lots of small pieces of glass work much better than one big piece. I used 6x6" squares that worked really well.
4) The car will smell like glass for a while.

I had 1 Rockford 8" in a ported box deep in the rear trunk well and it slammed, for an 8". People were always amazed when they saw only one little 8. I switched to 2 10" Rockfords on a baffle board and the sound was nowwhere near as tight as my 8. I think from now on I will only use 8s.

Too bad I didn't see this the other day.... http://www.salesco.com/speakers/6x9_...made_in_th.htm
They're ~$100 ($40 more than the ones you bought) but probably well worth it. But then again, there's the mounting depth issue.
Then there's these at $69 (the ones near the bottom of the page). They're probably the same quality as the Optimus, but easier to mount....

Plus they'd be better for mounting depth.
I think you'll be OK for what you want though.

hey any pictures yet? this sounds interesting, what if i went with components in kicks, and then 3 12"s in the back, would adding 8"s in the B pillars really help?
If you have a good set of component in kicks with a good enclosure and 3 12's in back (overkill IMO) 8's would be an absolute waste of time, money and aggrevation when trying to integrate them into the rest of the system. I used to have 8's along with comp sets and subs, I have sinced ditched them and couldn't be happier.
