ok right now i have the f-body issued -lol- flat board that lies across my trunk space w/the two holes cut in it - granted it sounds ok, i know im not getting the best punch - now i have the sony x-plod 12's and they are ok- i also have a bandpass box for them sitting in my garage- now im perfectly willing to fold the back seat and ly it in there if it will sound better- im hoping it will cause the air flow is there but what do you guys think?-

on a lesser note my whole system is sony exceot for my jenson amp powering my 6x9's and i think its fine- sony is a quality name and makes quality equipment- whats w/ all the guff?

 

all the guff is that sony doesnt feel they have to make good equipment any more, since people buy based on their "esteemed" name... why spend the extra money to produce something when people will buy it regardless? nevertheless, work with what you got.. the bandpass will almost definitely sound better than a plate.. id go for it if you dont mind giving up the seat

 

I agree, definitly fold the seats down and put the box there if you can afford to lose the space. As for Sony, I would lay down lots of money for their old(2 or 3 years) ES stuff. Their ES head units( Green or blue not red) were some of the best stuff ever made. Ditto with the ES subwoofers. They used to be soo good, but the stuff they make now is crap compared to the likes of Alpine.

 

Plates suck.

Now that I've got that off my chest, I'm not a fan of bandpass in a thirdgen either. Bandpass boxes are very finicky beasts. They need to be built to very specific parameters to match the sub properly... that means big $$$$ for a custom box. Buying a pre-fabbed bandpass box and slapping your subs in almost never sounds good. Bandpass boxes are also very, very large (Over 2x the size of a sealed box) and space is at somewhat of a premium in a thirdgen.

The plus side is that a properly built bandpass will filter all upper harmonics, which helps with low frequency imaging and sound quality.

Overall, in my opinion, the drawbacks far outweigh the advantages. It's not likely that you're going to get an affordable bandpass system that sounds anywhere near as good as a sealed system.
