Good luck! 12W7's are supposed to be in 1.375 cu.ft. each plus the displacement of the driver which brings it up to about 1.5 cu.ft. each. If you can a way to get that much airspace back there I'll be impressed. Especially if you do it with MDF. My best suggestion would be to use fiberglass so you could maximize internal volume. Keep us posted on how it goes!

BTW, I noticed you're in Seattle. If you'd like you can stop by and get an idea of the difference in airspace between fiberglass and MDF, and also see what's involved in building each. I'm about 25mi. SE of Seattle.

Hey REZN8R

I am thinking about doing a fiberglass box, because of weight and stuff, but i was wondering if it would be better to form the shape with chicken wire, then take the form out, and put the fiberglass on it, that way you dont have to worry bought getting it on the car. Would this work? any suggestions would be great

i wouldnt recommend it, because if it bends at all then the form isn't going to fit back in.. it's really not *that* messy, just put lots of foil down.. once you get the first layer on you can take it out and work on it outside the car.. i was pretty conservative when i put foil down in my honda, and i didn't get anything on the car... thats the only way to make sure it fits just how you want it to

Yeah the problem with that chicken wire idea is that when you pull the wire out it will most likely bend or flex a little. Plus when fiberglass is drying the reaction produces a pretty good amount of heat and has a tendacy to warp and such, by just havin it on the wire it very well may warp and then not fit back in.

What I do is put foil where I will actually be putting fiberglass and then use those really large trash bags tape them down covering everything in the general area of where you are working (if your leaning over a fender to apply the resin make sure to cover the car itself with plastic!).

Working with the stuff isn't that bad. Make sure you have a good amount of time, patience and latex surgical gloves! Also when mixing the resin I would suggest using small amounts at a time (like 8oz or so), getting the mixture right can be tough and annoying. I've put 32oz in once and put too much hardener and wasted 24oz of resin....I've also put too little hardener and have a mess.

I'm making a mold for the 3rd gen well box so I can finally start selling them. I layed one layer in the hatch and let it harden so I could work outside the car. One problem with that is laying fiberglass mat over the carpet. Of course the carpet was covered with a combination of masking tape and saran wrap, but it was still bumpy. Carpet is very seldom perfectly flat. So now I've been spending a lot of time using Bondo to fill in the waves from the carpet so I can get a smooth mold. Here's where I'm at so far:

well i have it a little better, whoeve had the car before me ripped all the carpet out of the hatch and layered it with dynamt X-treme, they layered it good, but because if that my premade thirdgen wooden box wont fit, so im looking at makeing a custom fiberglass one.
