Convertible system suggestions

Well, three years ago on my birthday my system was ripped out of my convertible, jacked up the sail panels and all

Well, now I think it's about time to get a new system put in and want to get everyone's opinion on specific suggestions for my convertible. Links are alwalys helpful.

One thing is I do NOT, can't stress that enough, want a thumping system. My car creaks enough, I don't need the trunk rattling too Here is what I am looking for:

Head unit w/ CD changer capabilities (mp3 capabilites preferred)
12 disc CD changer (preferabbly one that goes with the head unit)
6x9's for the rears
Tweeters for the pillars
4x6's for the front
5's for the doors
One Amp

I really wanted the sony Xplod, because the red and black fit perfectly with my red and black car, but everyone on here seems to hate sony. I know bad reason to pick a stereo, but with an all black interior and all red exterior, those 6x9's would look really cool. My last system was a JVC and it sounded great.

I would like to keep budget as low as possible, but would like to accomplish the goal for less than $1,500.00.

Thanks,

James

What do you think about...

this setup.

Infinity Kappa 462.5cfp 4x6’s
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=1084625CFP

Infinity Kappa 693.5I 6”x9” 3-way
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=1086935I++

Infinity Kappa 52.5I 5” 2-ways
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=108525I+++

Alpine MRV-F340 Amp
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=500MRVF340

Infinity Kappa Perfect T Tweeters
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=108PERFT++

Alpine CDA-7897
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=500CDA7897

Alpine CHA-S634 6-disc CD changer
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=500CHAS634

Head unit runs the tweeters and the 4x6’s.
Amp runs the 6x9’s and the 5¼’s "OR" should the amp run everything?

Installation
4x6’s in the dash.
6x9’s in the back
5¼’s in the door.
Tweeters in the pillars
Amp in the trunk.
CD changer in the lock box.

My questions with the above would be:
In the convertible trunk there is a flat spot facing you where I would be placing the amp, but I am afraid when I try to install it that I will drill through to the gas tank. Anyone with a convertible place their amp there can help?

Also will the amp mess with the fuel pump at all? Considering only about two thin sheets of metal will separate the two would this be a problem? Isn’t the amp a giant magnet? It’s a bit different in the convertible because the amp would lay almost flush right against the fuel tank.

Thanks for your info and opinions

James

awesome!!! that will be one awesome setup.. i would recommend running all the speakers off the amp, since it is 2-ohm stable; also, you should be able to find the items for a bit cheaper than crutchfield has them--they're known for higher internet prices, but still cheaper than local shops--but crutchfield does have excellent info about everything, so its good to shop there, because they have everything you need to know in one spot. one question, where do the 5" speakers go in a convert? another thing, you might want to consider picking up a pair of rezn8r's kick panels (~150) and use speakers there (up to 6.5" components) instead of the 4x6 in the dash, it will give you a bit better sound imaging, and you'll be able to use components rather than 2-ways.. but either way your system should sound awesome!!!

The 5's will go in the doors. Pretty much right before where you would put the kick panels, but I am WAY to tall to put kick panels in my car Basically for the same reason I couldn't put a t56 in my car if I wanted too.

Otherwise I would love to put them in, because the vinyl's would look great in my car.

Has anyone put a "center" speaker into the area right below the mid air vents on the dash? It seems to me it would be REALLY easy to build into there a small space that actually looked stock (by going to the bone yard and ripping some palstic from another dash). What do you think? It would have to be a square like a 4x6... would it be worth it?

First off, of the ppl here, who owns a convertible? And the center speaker sounds like a bad idea...lol I don't think it would image right...ne way, the rear panels do not have enought room behind them for 6x9s.....i tryed with the CMMD KAPPA 6x9s...the basket takes up WAY too much room. Those 4x6s are a good choice...they are what i put in...AMP ALL THE KAPPA....they can take the power and use it well. I am running them off an Alpine Deck and Amp....For my rear speakers i just figured out how to get some 6.5 components back there....i will show you guys when it all done, my car did not have the factory bracket still in it. For my sub, 10w0 JL, i have not installed it yet but it should bump very well. A good thing about the 10w0, VERY LITTLE AIRSPACE NEEDED, .5-.9 i am running .9 and what i plan on doing is making a board the runs all the way down from the top of the box to the floor and mounting the amps vertically on that...The W0 does not need alot of power (125 rms) and a small 2 channels amp does that very nicly with out taking up space....basically i am keeping about 3/4 to 1/2 of my trunk. As soon as i get all this in and up i will take pictures for you guys b/c it is not a hard setup to put in convertables and alot of ppl have no idea on what to do about systems in the convertibles. Sorry for any errors but i am in a hurry.

camaro6spd,

6x9's WILL fit in the rear panels. Maybe not a direct replacement, but it certainly isnt hard. There is a cross "bar" that the magnet will most likely stick directly too, but if placed correctly they will fit. I know I had them in there. Extra long screws help.

Here is my idea... Let me know what you think...

I had pioneers back there before, and they barely fit (modified to fit), since the kappa's are bigger (my ignorance ) What about making a foam ring to go under the plate than making it in fiberglass, covering in vinyl to match the sail panels and than install that way... It would stick out about 1/2 an inch, but it would allow it to work and would look semi stock because it would be a one piece looking unit. Just a little funk sticking out.

What do you think?

It might work, that is whati did with plywood mounting plate/spacer thingy i made up....t allowed me to put in 6.5 b/c i did not have the stock mounting plates and i could see no other way, i topmounted them and i got enough room back there now....not enough for 6x9s, and it is a half inch thick...the basket on the Kappa is HUGE....i mean he can try it but i think he should just save money and get kappa 6.5, i think it looks better and they are not soo large sticking out there and they provide plenty of mid-bass, the subs can fill in the rest.

I'm the guy lol

I am not going to put any subs into my car. I almost hate bass, hence the tweeters... I think the 5's and the 6x9's could fill in mid bass for me. With the convertible I just like hearing my music loud and clear. I think they will give me enough to be "full". What do you think?
