88 T/A factory amp location

I have an 88 T/A that has the gain control on the dash. I assume this control is for a factory amp. Does anyone know where the amp is located? Is it built into the head unit, or is there a separate amp?

afaik it's an external 50W amp. but i can't tell you where it is, because my car didn't come with one
