Opinion? How spend $800 on audio upgrade

I have an '89 camaro with stock tuner / speakers.
Any suggestions on how best to spend $800 or $900
for tuner with cd and tape...and speakers front
and rear? Do not care about sub at this time.
Also... where is the best place to buy 'em?
Thanks for the help!
Chuck

Deck: Pioneer DEH-P7400MP $245
Kicks by reszn8r: I think they are $140
Speakers for kicks: Kicker K5.2 components $129
Speakers in rear: Kicker K693 6X9's $129
Amp for speakers: JBL P80.4 $149
Total: $792 + s/h
This should be a pretty nice system for around $800
I got the prices from www.ikesound.com
You can get a nice alpine deck for about $100 more.

Hope this helps,
Brian

That looks pretty good. But you wanted a tape player and a cd player???
I think u should look around at www.crutchfield.com
Remember you have a 1.5 din opening - you may need to custom fit a double din deck.

I misread that you wanted a tape and a cd. Are you wanting a combo or a tape with a changer. Crutchfiled is a good place to look but I wouldnt buy from there for most things. The Pioneer DEH-P7400MP is $245 at ikesound and it is $330 at crutchfield, there free mounting brackets and wires are not worth $85. Just check around. Crutchfied does give you lots of info and alot of pics.

You can always do what I did. Figure out what type of sound you want to go for ... if you want a Lot of bass I would buy a big amp, nice capacitor, and 2 15"s, and if you don't care all that much about the way the head unit looks they are not that expensive at all.

I have a 1200 watt amp that I paid 110$ for
1.5 farad capacitor for 40$
2 12 " 600 watt subs for 125$
Aiwa head unit for 100$

Now I waited until I found a good deal on each, and the sound in my camaro is amazing.

once you know what type of sound you want to have you would be able to better situate yourself.

you could look for a tape player with cd changer controls and find a cheap cd change to go with it.

Well Chuck, regarding the plate in dash vs the kicks, it all depends on how good you want it to sound. A 'better-than-stock' system would have a new headunit, new 4x6 plates in the dash, new 6x9's in the back, a moderately powered 4 channel amp for the highs/mids, and then whatever you would want to do later for subs. You could easily upgrade to a 'better-than-stock' system for $800.
But if you want a high end system then you need to go with high end parts. Kickpanels and component speaker sets are considered high end. They would sound much better and be more expensive. It all depends on what you want. Some people want other people to hear their car (very loud setup = SPL). Other people just want good interior sound quality and the loudness is not important (good sound = SQ). Others find a mix between the two.

If you are the kind of guy who just wants the music to sound better but you're not interested in slamming it loud, then the 'better-than-stock' setup should be fine. Find a good headunit with a warranty that supports what you want (in this case tapes and CD's). Huckster had a great idea. Find a manufacturer that makes a tape deck with CD changer controls. Then get the cd changer and mount it somewhere in the car. This will be more expensive than just finding a deck that supports CD's, but if you want to play tapes then I think thats the best way to do it. Then get some higher end 4x6's and 6x9's (make sure the brands and model levels match) and a 4 channel amp that matches them.

If you were interested in a high end system, a system you could turn up on the freeway with the windows down and drown out the sound of your car, then I would sudgest you use that $800 as 'stage 1' of your setup and build it from there. $800 could get you a high end CD player that supports MP3's as well as a set of kickpanels and a 5 and 1/4 component set. Then you could run that (components off the deck and stock 6x9's) untill you're ready for stage 2. Stage 2 could be a high power 4 channel amp, 6.5" component set in the rear (6.5" brackets in the 6x9 location), an upgraded battery, and then whatever you wanna do fo the subs.

All depends on what quality of sound/loudness you want and how much you have to spend. The best piece of advise I can give is to stay away from unknown cheap brands. Stick with name brands and warranty's.

Im not talking anyone down here, but if you look around, used or new, you should be able to get pretty damn good sound quality with some cranking power. One thing im thinking you might not be able to get is a amp for the speakers... for 800$ anyways.

I am going to list prices here, most are from ebay ( ebay is the greatest place to buy speakers, subs, amps )

Deck = Used sony, 50-100$, new 200-250$ for a decent good looking one, but it will not power those speakers to even close to what you would like too.

Infinity 6952i 6x9's ( these are not top of the line, but if you dont have an amp, these will sound just as good as the kappas or whatever ) 71$ + shipping

Infinity 462.5cfp 4x6's ( These are the kappa's, but for the price difference between the lower level and these on ebay, just get these ) 77$ + shipping

2002 Fosgate 500s Punch ( Not exactly top of the line, but fosgates stuff is under rated, great stuff, even the punch, a worthy buy and will make any good subs sound even better ) New 249.99$

2 Rockford Fosgate he2 subwoofers ( very good subs, have had great experience with them, hx2's are better, but with that amp, it will sound just perfect with these ) 259.99$ for two. Ive seen em cheaper, but Im not gonna devote my night to searching heeh

With this combo, you are looking more at like 900$, but with this combo you are getting everything new besides deck, and trust me, you can get some killer deals on decks, im not really getting a killer deal on 1, but im getting a 3 week old sony 50x4, for 60$, i think it has two preouts, which is great for me, a reliable semi-decent deck, for 60$, not bad at all. Also another opinion of mine, the bass you will be hearing in a camaro, will be so loud, its not even funny. You ever see those honda's with bodykits, that just thump around and around, well this will sound like that. I love rock, and bass together, it is a new experience of music, its incredible.

One more thing, you can always get used amplifers, while just browsing for this combo, i saw a 1000 watt fosgate amp in the low 200s with less then like 6 hours on it. I also saw a 800a2 in the high 100's with less then 24 hours on it. IMO i would get that 800a2, yeah its used and older, but for low 200's with shipping cost, u have an amp that will push quite a bit more power then that 500s. But either way, the difference will be quite minimal.

My experience with camaros is that with the subs bouncing off that glass, almost anything will thump, i had a kenwood 4 channel amp unbridged so only running 1 channel out of this weak *** kenwood amp up to a mtx like 6000 or something, and it got looks... use the glass to ur advantage, but i dunno if u would even want to hook up that bad *** of subs in the back of a cammy.... my friends fosgate setup, 500x2, two he2s in ur truck, is lets just say, it can cause hearing problems lol.

Sorry for long post, hope you read it, lots good info and experience.

best advice i can give is look around at crutchfield, they have one of the widest selections, pick out what you want, and if you feel comfertable with e-bay, use that, the have some retailers that regulary post some decent items for cheap, usually have a rating of over 500... either that or just search the net, its easy to find prices once you know what you are looking for.
and as for what you actually look for, in my opinion, no matter how good the 4x6's u get for the dash, nothing can beat a good component system, if you mount the tweeters in the right positions its just amazing sound volume and quality. and if you get a good set of 6x9's for the back, get bass blockers for the speakers up front, youll get better quality if you cut the bass from them, u can get them at crutchfield for 4 bucks a pair. u have the 6x9's playing the big bass, and cut the 5 1/4s at around 300 hz, i have that setup and the clarity up front is amazing, i can turn it up much louder without the distortion i used to have before i cut the bass out.

I wouldnt get sony, alot of people have had tons of problems with sony. And if you are wanting a high end system, go with Alpine, Pioneer premeir, or kenwood excelon(whatever it is called). If you go with Kickers or like battery said, Infinity's for your speakers you will have a very clean very loud system. If you are not wanting subs then you will definatly need to power them, they are high end speakers and need to have the right amount of RMS put to them for them to be at their best.

89blackgta,

I would not get sony either, if i had a choice, or if it wasnt in the budget. But sony decks are not that bad, subs/amps on the other hand are an entire different story, do not buy them unless you can get it practically free.

Also, as you said, if you are not getting subs, you will definitely need to power those speakers with an amp, there isnt a deck out there ( atleast in this price range, but probably in any range ) that can power 100watts rms, infact its going to be hard to find a decent deal on an amp that can power that for four channels, probably looking at over 300$ new, or around 200$ used.

It also depends on what you buy and who you buy it from, fosgate is reliable, great, but also expensive, sony is cheaper, for the cost it isnt so bad, but will not last as long or sound/power as good.

Just depends what you want to do, and how much you want to spend. Especially, used or new.

ebay is a great way to get a system cheap and you can get a full system maybe for around $800. deffinately go with kickpanels, whether you buy em or build em. 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 speakers up front. figure around $100-150 per pair of speakers. dont spend any less than $200 for a new deck. i highly recommend the jvc digifine series, although i dont think they have any tape decks. for an amp, look for a used mtx, rockford, kicker, etc. i picked up a pretty good one that was a couple years old for under $100 and it put out good power. a good all around sound quality and spl sub is the alpine type-r. i've been recommending these things since they came out and got one of my own. can be found online for $130 new and you wont find something better for the price.

The JBL P80.4 $149 would be a great amp at a even better price for those speakers, which is what I had said in my first post.

I'd go with ebay or personal sellers...I got a nice-a** Legacy deck for $79 off ebay...2 rockford punch xlc 12s from a friend for $150 and a 1400 watt Legacy amp for $100. Ebay should cover you for almost everything if you don't find people selling stuff...I buy and sell car stereo stuff so If you need anything send me a PM and I will se what I can find...
