system advice
I have the stock sound system in my 89 firebird and I'm wanting to upgrade, because stock has relatively no bass and doesn't sound very good. I don't have a ton of money to spend, so bad *** $3k systems are out of the question. I'd like something that I could possibly upgrade so I don't waste my money and something that sounds good. Something like what new Trans Am's come with wouldn't be bad, maybe a bit better. What should I get and how much am I looking at for it? Hopefully this question won't go ignored.
well...
First thing is always money. There are alot of good head units out there for about $200-$250. Speakers are just as easy, 4x6 up front and 6x9 rear. You can easily spend $200 for both front and back and get some good stuff. The sub box is a little more complicated. You need the box first look at

I belive they are about $200 but they are very nice. The subs you can get a pair for about $100. The amp is critical, you need a good one. Look for a good mono amp, this place has some good prices on JBL amps look for the 600.1 for about $200 it's a great deal.
So total you're looking at about $1000 for a good system.

skip replacing the 4x6 and 6x9 get a set of components, and a set of custom kickpanles, that way if in the future you want to upgrade, you can add some mid bass drivers to the 6x9 locations, or something else back there. As for the sub box, make one, you can get all the help you need right here on the boards!:hail: Then get subs, and an amp as stated the JBL's offer best bang/buck
oops
Look here for that JBL amp. They have good prices on other stuff too.

I would try it in this order. Is your deck is it what you want it to be?. Are you going to upgrade? are the speakers still good? I always start with the head unit, but if you have a head unit that you like and you put a new stronger one in with the factory speakers then it may still sound like crap. your gonna have to get new speakers sooner or later anyway because they usually go first. So I would start with a good matched set of speakers. then a new head unit to replace factory or what is currently in there. then figure how much sound you want. if you want more bass then pick the subs first. then choose the enclosure and size, I always make mine, and then get the right sub to power them. the sub is probably going to cost you the most but dont go cheap there. You dont want to spend 200 twice when you can spend 350 once and get something that is quality and will last forever. that is just my opinion though.
