Sony's Xplod line sucks. Their home audio rules, but their car audio stuff breaks CONSTANTLY. Even here on this board, you can see posts from people whose Xplod stuff gave up on them. I wouldn't trade my four-year-old Pioneer deck for a brand new Xplod.

Clarion rocks with their 24 Bit sound. I would only buy 2 kinds of decks. Either a real cheap one or a real expencive one. RIght now I have a cd player that I got from a someone used for 25 bucks. The is the cheap one till I get one of these Clarions.

I disagree with sony being junk. Sony is the only brand I can say I am completely loyal to. Everything from my home theatre to my alarm clock is Sony, and I have never had any problems with any of their products. I have that exact Sony deck described, but it is still in the box, so I can't tell you how it works. I have faith in will be in the car for a loooonnngggg time.

I hate Sony now. I got my MobileES deck right before the xplod came out, and it's still a POS. It broke twice in the 2 year warranty (first broke 1 year, 1 month, then 4 months later), keeps getting messed up and needs to be reset, doesn't always want to eject the disc. Even the repair shop said Sony had a high repair rate. As for their home stuff, its not much better. My Trinitron TV has broken twice, my changer broke after a few years, the tape deck broke. I used to think Sony was good so I bought, then after I had alot of thier products, everything started breaking like mad. Now I buy Pioneer for home theater and haven't had 1 problem. When my car deck goes, I'm not going to pay to fix it again. I'm buying Kenwood or Alpine. If the stock Delco deck lasts for 10 years, was can't the Sony last more then a year?

Go with the 7892, I promise you will not be dissapointed. I had the 7892 for a month and upgraded to the 7894 because I wanted the MP3 function. It(7892) has time delay for all four speakers, wireless remote, and many others you've probably read about. I replaced a sony with that Alpine and the Alpine puts it to shame. Just my .02. Go with what you like, everyone has different taste. Good luck in your search. If you have any questions about the Alpine, let me know.

Correction: your the only one who can afford the stuff, lol. From the eclipse stuff I heard it sounds like it would be hella-expensive.

I would only touch a clarion or pioneer with the lines out right now. Both brands are reliable and very good quality.
Sony sucks as has been stated...
Alpine are alright accept in my opinion they are overpriced and have pretty bad quality control, and their support and warantees are complete
Eclipse is great but moocho money.
If you dont care about name and you just want something decent and reliable, go jensen, jvc, I would really put kenwood in this category but they are borderlining it.
Rockford and blaupunkt are also decent but I would take a clarion or pioneer over these.
All from personal experience, what Ive been told, and my opinion.

i would suggest a pioneer premiere of some sort. what ever you can afford. i worked at a car stereo shop and we sold pioneer, clarion, rockford, sony, and kenwood decks. the pioneers seemed to sound better in most applications and they have more options. the only problem w/ the premieres is that you are paying for those cool graphics. i have a clarion dxz-725. i think it retails for like $310 or $320. i think it sounds great. its also good if you are going with a multiple amp setup since it has 3 sets of preouts.

i would say the sony would be the last thing you should choose. about the only good car stereo equipment they make is their 4-channel amps.

The eclipse stuff i will most def agree is damn expensive, but its also in my opinion the cleanest sounding gear out there. But they guys in this board are most def correct to say that sony blowz....i mean come on..xplod?..that name should tell you somethin in itself. Not to be condesending, but you kiddies need to look past how it looks , and look more into how functional it has, how powerful it is, and how it sounds. Think about why your buying it. To play music. Are you watching your music?..im bettin not for 300 bucks (maybe for 700 get a good display and play dvd's and watch ur music). Therefore in my opinion you should concentrate on how it sounds, not how it looks. I'll be the first to admit eclipse's head units are not the prettiest, but they sound damn good, and thats why i buy them. Not cuz they flip around in circles, have pretty lil dolphins goin across them, or those other lil gimmicks. Just my 2 c.

Alpine and Eclipse are the only brands id consider buying. Ive always had immense success with Alpines. They have great sound quality, easy to use controls, i think they are aesthetically pleasing (with the exception of that one line two years ago, they were nasty).

Currently i have an older CTA-1505/S624 combo in one car, and a CDA-7894 in the other. Both are wonderful. The mp3 function on the 7894 is awesome too.

I used to really like Pioneer Premier, until they started getting to gimmicky. Im not a big fan of fancy displays, fold down crap. Things like the MASk faces on kenwoods are one thing, but having a fold down flap for more screen room is silly IMHO. Id rather impress my friends with quality sound than quality trinkets.

Eclipse, i put right up there with Alpine in Quality, just not a big fan of their styling. But they are still great decks.

Hey, whats with needing a 200 Watt amp wiring kit for the alpine 7894? I was looking at getting the 7893 (only cuz I dont like the green illumination, and its a lil cheaper) and it says I need a 200 Watt amp kit. That's crazy, I've never heard of needing an amp kit for a head unit. Lend me some info on this plz and tell me what you need it for.

i'm very partial to Clarion, Kenwood, and JVC's Digifine series of decks. JVC's sh909 (or the previous sh99 model) has some of the best features and specs ive seen on a deck for around $300 (on the net). looks beautiful too. stay away from sony xplod. some of us remember the days when sony was good. i had a couple mobile es pieces that were spectacular. unfortunately, those days have passed. the deck thats in my car now (came in the car when i got it) is an xplod and have nothing but probs when its cool or cold out. buttons dont work right or at all. only reason why it's been allowed to stay in my car is the fact that i wanted to get as much of the rest of my system before i replaced something that still worked (sorta).

DISTURB:

They say that the decks require an amplifier wiring kit because Alpine recommends giving theunit its own dedicated 12v wire straight to the battery, as well as its own ground. They advise AGAINST using the wiring harness for those things. I think they say the wires in the harness are not sufficient gauge, or something. (Been a couplemonths since i hooked up my 7894.)

Also, (and im sure you already knew this) the 7892/4 also lights up orange, you can switch it from the green, which may match better if you have a Firebird (not sure).

The7893 is real nice looking, but IMHO not worth it at all. For the 30 dollar retail difference, moving up to the 7894 gets mp3 compatability, which i grew addicted to over night when i put the 94 in my gf's car. Now im wanting to upgrade myCTA-1505!!

Of course, if you have youre heart set on the looks of the 93, you can always gt the best of both worlds with the CDA-7895. Only issue there is you must be running external amplifers, because it has no onboard power source. And of course, the price.

Hope this helps

Edited because this go<x>ddamn spacebar doesnt work!!!

Hmm...Maybe I will go for the MP3 thing...it'll be great to have all 800 songs on about 10 CD's...can you get a pic of the orange glow of the 94? Thanx for all the info, it really helped!

Disturb,

I dont have a digi cam, or any film, or id snap a pic for you. But its nice and bright, and its a bold orange, although i know that doesnt help much.

Bubba, you can drill a small hole in the firewall and use a grommet. Or if you already have a hole for any amp wires you can go there, but it doesnt sound like it (cuz the other wires in the harness are speaker leads). Just go one at a time, follw the instructions, cant think of any other help really....

Dude it's super easy.

You can also run to the Fuse Block if you like.

Just make sure you do your own ground.
Make it a good one, it will make a difference.

I just got the 7894, Hell ya. It's sweet.
I love it. And having 150 songs on one cd rules.

Does anyone know if the delco cd players will fit in the thirdgens?
I'm pretty sure they will but i just wanted to know if anyone here has done it.

Aftermarket stuff is cool, but after having my car broken into twice and having stereo stolen, aftermarket can kiss my a$$.
I want a delco w/ theftloc.
The aftermarket is nothingless than pathetic. Sure we have bada$$ stereos, but how much do you really have in protection?
We have to resort to hiding our stuff or removing faces, it's ridiculous.

Dude, attention is what that game is all about. Im not saying you did anything wrong, because i do not know the circumstances regarding youre stuff being stolen.

But i drove my Firebird to an all day, all night concert. I left it in the parking lot surrounded by thousands of people tailgating and partying, and not a MARK was left on my car. I drove in real quiet, and i drove out real quiet. The people who light up the tires or blast the bass in the parking lots are the ones who get remembered, and get broken in to the most.

Hell, there were 5 subs in my trunk at the concert, three of them COMPLETELY visible from the windows (through the tint, mind you).

Meanwhile, back home, a coworker who has everything in the trunk of a Grand Am (which cannot be seen from outside) got his car picked apart because he blasts his **** all over town.

Just have to be modest around others

admr: I can't agree with you more. I do the same thing (keeping it quiet).
but when you drive up to a blood bank at 12 noon (listening to radio at low volume, i never had subs, just factory speaker)to donate blood, you don't expect to get ripped off. I wasn't in the place for 30 mins and my window busted and stereo gone

Before that my car was at a mechanic shop over night. Someone breaks into all the cars takes everyones stuff, me included of course.

So how was i ever in the wrong either time. I no you said i was not. But I'm just sick and tired of this BS. Why can stereo manufactures make a great stereo, and do almost nothing in the way of theft prevention. I shouldn't have to carry a damn faceplate around everywhere i go.

Anyway, sorry for babbling, it's just extremely aggravating

my experiance with clarion...JUNK....but that is my experiance....my old Alpine Headunit is 7 years old and still ticking just fine, but I opted for a new one so i took the old one and installed it in a truck at work(replacing a clarion that was in there that was broke, and that was even before that truck saw dusty work , it used to be some guys commuter)....excavating...VERY DUSTY in the cabs....its still works just fine.

I was looking at the Alpine decks and it says use a 200W (10g) wiring set, right? Well, Im getting ready to replace my 350W wiring set (8g) with an 800W wiring set (4g). Can I use my 8g wire for the alpine unit, or is it to much?

Next unit I get will be a Clarion or an Eclipse... The Clarion that just got stolen from me, I have had for 6 years.... used every day, been across the country. Perfect. No problems. Never even skipped. I'll miss her, until I can replace her....

For now, I am borrowing an older Sony from my Bro, it worked well in his wifes Saturn, so I have no complaints. I will admit that I would never buy any Xplod stuff. It sounds like crap, and looks it too...

I love the silver trim around your stereo and heater, I just did mine, I think it ads a very nice look to a rather dull interior. I also did my gauge trim thingy too, and will do the rest of my console if I could twist that damn ball off the shifter....

Hey, what did you all pay for the 7894? Ike sound has it for $342.00 and says I save $143.00. List price says $485.00. I am completely willing to pay $350 for a kick-*** CD/MP3 player, even if it does have the green display And the wiring kit...is 8 guage to much?
