amped 6x9's

I have a kicker 120.2 hooked up to my two way infinity referances I bridged the amp to get 2 ohms since the speakers are 4 ohm after about two days they sounded like crap i popped my trunk and i had smoke rolling off the coil's i know i wasn't giving them to much power and the guy at crutchfield said the amp was clipping but it works fine with other speakers. so my question is did i just get a bad set of speakers(because i know infinity makes quality spakers) or was it the way i had it wired? is it possible something else is the problem? They're replacing them for free but i don't want to fry another pair of speakers.

It seems odd to me that running those speakers at 2 ohms would fry them. I would first suspect the amp; it's possible something's wrong with its wiring or it's not stable at 2 ohms. If you're not going to be pushing tons of power, I wouldn't worry about dropping the ohms to 2; just wire them up in 4 ohm stereo and see how they do for a week. Double check all your wiring, as well. Did both 6x9s get fried or just one of them?

bridging anything but subs is almost always a bad idea

Bull****. Car cd players that have 50x4 output only have 13x4 RMS power. There will be a big difference. Kicker has quality output, HU's dont.

That's what I was about to say. I would never brige an amp powering a full range speaker.

Exactly.

The current 50W X 4 is what they used to call 25W X 4, and even that was over-rated generously. Somewhere along the way it got mysteriously doubled!

Only the fine print on the power amps can be trusted, when they state X Watts into 4 Ohms at Y% distortion. Otherwise don't believe the hype.
