Which direction should speakers in the kicks point?
Which direction should speakers in the kicks point?
What I mean, is should they be aimed toward a center point at head level, or should they just be flush mounted facing each other with the transmission in between them?

The most critical speaker to aim is the tweeters. They are going to produce the most "directional" sound, and if they're off, you aren't gonna hear them the way you should.
I think a good way to aim the tweets is so that the driver's side points at the ear of the passenger, and the passenger side points at the ear of the driver, though I could be wrong.
As for the mids, I'd say tilt them towards you as much as you can/want without sacrificing too much legroom.

The answer is "whatever sounds best". There's no hard-and-fast rule to adhere too. All installations are going to sound a little different, and each one may benefit from a slightly different position. What I did was to mock them up in position with hardware that allowed me to move them around. Once I got the best imaging I could, I laid the fiberglass.
I used to go by a rule of trying to aim everything up towards the dome light. Problem there is that when you get a mid aimed like that in our cars it could be sitting on top of your brake pedal. I would focus mostly on the tweeter and then position the mid where it sounds best and doesn't cut into your leg room. I'm working on mounting my four inch mid into a mold that I can control like a power mirror so I can change the angle anyway I want. Something unique for competition purposes.
Like Jim said, there is no set way to place them, every car is different and every driver has different dispersion characteristics so you have to adjust until it sounds best.
One suggestion made by Scott Buwalda for a starting point is to aim them to behind the radio. I followed that and had better reults than with them pointing in any other general area (ie dome light).
How I went about setting mine up was pick a general area I wanted them to 'intersect' and then give them a try, make small changes but still keeping them in the original general orientation. Then try a different area for them to intersect and then make adjustments to that. It takes a while to find a spot where it sounds good, but with enough patience you will find it.
